vbulletin.com (although they have been getting worse lately I still love 3.8)
simplemachines.org
invisionpower.com

We did recently added forum to our website so I did lot of research beforehand for a best forum script and we decided to get vBulletin. It is really good script an I would strongly recommend it. You can go to their website and play around with the demo to see if you like it and also get more information about the script. This Forum here is vBulletin and doesn’t it look good and user friendly. And I have to tell you that the back end is also vary extensive and easy to operate.

While I do like VB, I am not sure I will be using it on future projects.
Also the 'look' and feel of this forum is from the designer, not the script

Yes of course it from the designer, ( very nice ) but I meant more like the overall vBulletin features and what you can do with it. Even the default look is really good which we have kept as it is very clean and easy to the eyes .

Is there any particular reason you would not use vbulletin anymore and what would you use instead then.

I suggest PhpBB or IPB. vBulletin is not that bad too. I would never use other that these 3 though.

My host gives me free Fantastico so I get a choice of several forum scripts including phpBB or SMF. I used phpBB for a while and then switched over to VBulletin after a few months and everything is working great.

Both of them scripts are open source so thats why supportable by Fantastico however Vbulletin is Paid and not come in Pre-Installed Version

The best forum script, huh?
There is only 1 script that comes to my mind, it's vBulletin
but unfortunately if you're looking for free forum script, I'd suggest that you get a myBB or phpBB instead
