All depends on what you're interested in, if you're thinking about running a forum, you need to be interested in what the forum is about.

Choose the forum topic that you have the most passion about. Something that you have at least a little bit of knowledge in, as that will make it 10 times easier to get the initial content posts started and development process complete. Choosing topics you have no clue about just because someone else thinks it's cool is setting yourself up for failure. Just be you.... Do what interests you!

In my opinion, a niche type forum usually does better because everyone who participates shares the same passion for whatever the subject is. On the other hand, general forums can end up with more users but with so many around competition is stiff.

General Discussion Forum is better.It should contain all sorts of topic.They are easy for getting the visitors.But you need to categorize the topics.In some forum sites I have noticed that there is no particular category is there.Any body can post any topic in any category.This is not at all advisable.It should be observed by the administrator of the Forum.

For popularity and easy posts, the General Discussion forum will generate no problem. If you have a group of hardcore posters who want to really discuss a niche topic, the other areas are definitely better if you want quality posts.

Entertainment and general forums are very easy to participate. So you have huge possibilities of getting huge members but they will spam your forum.

But if you open a Study related forum then you will not get huge member on that but your forum will remain spam free.
