I want to share my biggest web secret. I know this will sound simple and some people will consider it a no-brainer. However, with all of the people asking questions in forums like "how do I make money on line?", "what is the fastest way to get indexed in Google?" and "what are good blackhat SEO techniques?" I wanted to say there is a way to become successful by thinking exactly the opposite way. It has worked for me.
I have a site that gets 25,000 unique targeted hits per month. It has Google AdSense units which earn the minimum payout amount every 2 months. It also offers a paid service which has a nice handful of customers. When this site first started, I wanted to make it look like the Google home page. In other words, it would have a white background, some header text and the main function of the site purposefully placed at the top. Beneath that were a few paragraphs about the site to make sure search engines had something to index. OK that part isn't much like the Google home page, but this site needed a little explaining. I submitted it to some directories and various search engines. It started off with no advertisements and I was not selling anything or asking for any money. It was just a simple, free and useful service. I didn't even think about turning a profit as the first thing.
What I made was a platform to measure the true usefulness and create the potential to gain popularity. The traffic to the site grew steadily. It was then and only then - after showing some value - that I placed AdSense units on it. Later, I developed a paid version of the service with advanced features for a monthly fee. The limited free part is still there. I traded links with a lot of relevant sites, especially big ones as my traffic became comparable. I even purchased a few advertisements.
The point here is that I didn't go into it thinking mainly about making money. I was patient, started small and really developed it into a quality site which became popular on its own. Making money happened later.
