Thread: Using your real name online

When I first start marketing online I never used my real name. I simply went by the name of bbrian017. My name is Brian so I thought that was appropriate. Three years have past and I still go my Brian but I also share my last name now on my websites.

On some level I find using your real name bring respect, trust and appreciation into the picture when trying to brand your website, product or service.

What's your opinion on this? Do you use your real name online when marketing or do you use a fake or brand name?

I agree with you. I use my real name when marketing all the time, but not always my last name.

I find it allows a potential client or customer to connect with your business on a more 'real' level.

i was actually planing to use my real name once i'm done with my real esate site.
i've been trained for real estate for months and i though maybe i should use my real name once i get to meet my potential client, then he wouldn't have to ask why my real name is different from online

I work as a freelance writer, so I use my real name, but I mainly use the pen name sarahberra for forums and other sites.

I started blogging under my own name, but wish I didn't.
I really need something more transferrable and catchy.

I always put my real name at the bottom in the copyright notice.

In the company I work for I am head of marketing and web development (not a big jump because there are 15 of us) I made a person for directory website because I would get phone calls all the time but on forums I put my real name just because I know I won't get 50 phone calls a day from someone selling their SEO services.

I use Zap on most forums I'm at. Habit. And now many know me as that.
I opted for anonimity out of respect for my family and their privacy.
You have to pick and choose who you divulge your personal information to.

I normally don't use my real name.

Using one's real name can be helpful, but sometimes it can be better if our profile is recognized by the product name or keyword.

I use my name but all site and info is in my BF name. Only give out to people I trust. I had a stalker don't want to go through that again.

I only use my real name on one site on the internet and it's definitely not Facebook.

Anonymity is very underrated.

I go by a few names online (and on facebook ).

Facebook is good to catch up with people from the past, but I would also rather avoid family and extended family members on there.

The thought has crossed my mind to change my name to Halo because I am Halo more than I am me. We know each other as these identities (nicknames?) when I see a pic of Zap or Buffalo I don't think of their offline names, but their online titles.

He would need to trust me I changed all his passwords

I use a brand name ( nickname ). I have no problem saying my name ( if asked ) but just I'm used to go online with my nickname.

Sure you are right saying that using real name in your work or in any socialization way. But sometimes it's better to use nick, because your experience and respect can be not so perfect as you can think. So it's up to us what to use and how to use it as well.
