Thread: What to use ASP.NET or PHP

I am looking to design a site but I am not sure what language to use. I have heard how good php and MySQL is and it is open source and I can use oSCommerce with it too, but I have also heard some raving reviews about .NET and XML awith the SQL Server 2005 soon to be released.

I am just wondering what everyone else thinks and what their opinions are?

I think PHP is better than ASP.NET. But it depends on your technique.

I would go for PHP in this comparison.

I started off with asp.net later converted to a php fan. php is a lot better and easier to work with (just my opinion)

PHP is a specialized scripting language; you cannot build an entire site using it alone.

ASP is not a language at all, but a specialized application that serves as a platform upon which a site is built.

If you were to make a search on the Internet on how loyalists of both PHP and ASP.net are doing almost everything by biting each other's heads off, you will realize how hot this debate actually is. The major contention is that Microsoft products are generally considered to be superior to other products, but then there are programmers that have been using PHP since ages and never once has it let them down. While there is acclaim for ASP.net being more robust and speedier, PHP fans maintain that PHP has much better support and a very easy to understand language.
