Thread: Before you try using keywords on Google!

Google is obviously a great choice for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). However there are acouple simple things you should consider before you start thinking about using SEO. Keywords are vital to using a search engine.

Keywords-->For those who are uncertain what keywords are, it is simply the word or words that are type into a search engine to find your website or blog...etc.

Keys to Keywords
-look for high search rates
-low competion

This means, you want your keyword/keyphrase to have a high amount of traffic with little competion. This optimizes your chance of getting more and more people interest in your particular subject matter.

The easiest way to figure all of this out, is to go to google and type in "keyword tool". From there they will have a box with "desired keyword". After you type yours in it will spit out statistics of what kind of traffic those particular words receive.

On my larger sites such as forums with hundreds of thousands of posts, I get far more traffic from less competitive key phrases. I may only get a couple of searches per key phrase but there are thousands I get hits for. Sometimes I think people get too focused on just one or two phrases rather than building something that will always get hits because it is diversified.

I agree, it is a balancing act. On the one hand you want traffic but there is no point wasting your time with a 2 word combination keyword if it returns 50 million results. If you are way back on page 48 it will not bring you any visitors. There is a lot to be said for using longer keyword combinations.

I think for better analyzing keywords, it is always good to use KEI, Keyword effective Index. Lesser the KEI, means the better the keyword. I understand its always good to have right balance between the competitiveness and search rate, but sometimes long keyphrase works well.

it's also a good idea to analize the first site PR and backlinks before doing SEO...
