When they set up Google, they just invented a new word which is a secret to everybody, even to the founders.
Google derived its name from the word "googol", a term coined by then nine-year-old Milton Sirotta, nephew of the American mathematician Edward Kasner. The story goes, Kasner had asked his nephew to invent a name for a very large number - ten to the power of one hundred (the numeral one followed by 100 zeros), and Milton called it a googol. The term was later made popular and in Kasner's book, Mathematics and the Imagination, which he co-authored with James Newman. Later, another mathematician invented the term "googolplex", which represents ten to the power of a googol - a substantially larger number.

Whether an accidental or a required change, the name Google is based on the mathematical term "googol", coined in 1938 to equal 10100, a number much larger than any practical counting operation would require (there are an estimated 1080 atoms in the known universe).
i think unique name
Cant say anything about this?
It is a name and they can use anything.
Interesting fact.
Thanks Dking for asking it and thanks a lot to albert321 and aristotle for sharing the story of origin of google. It seem right coz many have rough idea that it is related to mathematical terms.

It's derived from a typo of googol... lol...
Why don't you ask Matt Cutts.
However i think it is have long history
Perhaps most of users never payed any attention to this point!
The story that albert321 posted is very interesting!
I am agreed with albert321 i think its right concept but i think it was unique name therefor they have choose it.
Nice post . But I am still confused . Why its name Google.
The word Googol describes a number which is followed by one hundred zeros. Google is just a bit of corporate twisting onto that word. A Googolplex is a number which is followed by a googol of zeros.
Google's HQ is named the Googleplex, so it is implied that they named it after the number.
Google derived its name from the word "googol", a term coined by then nine-year-old Milton Sirotta, nephew of the American mathematician Edward Kasner.
whatever Google means its rocks man.....Google is great
Eventually, they changed the name to Google, originating from a misspelling of the word "googol", the number one followed by one hundred zeros, which was picked to signify that the search engine wants to provide large quantities of information for people. Originally, Google ran under the Stanford University website, with the domain google.stanford.edu
Why don't you go and ask Google why they used the name Google? :P

Google did get its name from the Latin word for infinite, Googal. It means unlimited answers.

Agreed, albert321 hit the nail on the head. But if you really thought about it, Google is a really strange name isn't it?
The name "Google" originated from a misspelling of the word "googol", which refers to 10100, the number represented by a 1 followed by one hundred zeros. Having found its way increasingly into everyday language, the verb "google" was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006, meaning "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet."

Its unique name i think and historical....
Google domain name was registered on 15th September, 1997 and it was not found as Google, but was found as googol. It means to specific large numbers. Larry Page and Sergey Brin were looking to register the domain with googol, but because of misspelling it was typed as Google and after that it became the biggest name over web.
