Default Export to GIF text looks choppy..why?

    Hey guys,

I bought this new template for my newest forum, and the header is done as a transparent GIF. I had to change the text to fit my forum. I was going to do it as a PNG, which doesn't mess up the text but IE doesn't handle transparent PNGs well.

I'm using GIMP, I went through a stock photo site and found some decent stock material for my header image.. I finally figured out how to make a white background transparent.. That took me forever. As you can tell, I'm not much of a graphic artist.

Anywho, when I save as a GIF, the text becomes choppy and looks crappy. Prior to export it looks fine.

See what I mean, it looks like parts are missing.. Is there an option I'm missing, do I have to use a certain type of font? I spent a good couple of hours on this today, and my computer almost went out the window.

    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

Ie handles transparency fine, so long as it's, IE7.

Now, as for your problem, When you save, try exporting to ...

    You're using gimp? :\

    Here.

Tell me the text's you used in that title, and size /whatnot.
    Link me to that stock.

    I'll save it for you.

If your saving your image as a gif in photoshop, you can alter the 'Matte' setting.
If you change the Matte setting to the colour of the background where you will be placing your gif, the dodgy edges should look a lot better.

Or if you save the image as a png, the fix on IE PNG Fix - TwinHelix will fix the image in Internet Explorer 6

transparent gifs*are* choppy. the reason is that they have just two levels of transparency: on or off, unlike pngs, which have over 250 levels. to get a smooth result, use seo london's suggestion for matte, if it's going to be a background image. the png fix doesn't work very well with background transparent pngs, even though there's a separate fix for that one.

He said he's using GIMP , no matte option there as far as I know.

I think you should go for the most ameteuristic way there is.

Get the picture on what you wan't the text to appear , rewrite the text on that & save.

    And everything should look fine.

ie6 doesn't handle transparent pngs. ie7 is okay, and normal pngs are okay. i recently had to rework an entire website which took for granted that ie handles transparent pngs. back to the drawing board, it was.
