Thread: First Time you saw the internet

Ok, since this is a forum about the "Internet", let's see if you can remember the first time you saw it.

I had a friend talk to me about chat rooms back around 1996 or so. He logged into his modem and showed me, but I thought it was stupid and really geeky, and thought nothing more of it.

It wasn't until around 1998 that the dance studio where I was working showed me their plans for their new website. Again, I thought it was not worth any more thought, but a little later they showed me how it worked, and I've been online ever since.

Have to go back to the late 80's for this one.
BBS and backdoor to this network where one could actually talk to people from other states.
Those were the fast days of 300 baud.
And when I went to 1200 baud, thought I was blazing!

[MENTAL](ahh.. reminiscing.. hehe)[/MENTAL]all i can remember is the first time i used the internet was 1998.. when i was in first year High school.. i used to report in front of the class.. then my teacher told me to search for a certain lesson that cannot be found in our textbook.. so a friend told me try to search it on the net.. as i remember I used Internet explorer at that time...

my first impression about internet is "Internet Explore"....i thought that was internet...

i cant remember when this was exactly but it was around the time that a satellites trip to some planet was broadcast on the internet and we could see what it looked like. I can't remember the details because I was to young to give a damn lol

I was too busy running around the library to look at the screen so it was around 10 years ago at least-probably more

In 1999 mostly to send and receive mails from email from my brother.
Use to visit nearby Cyber Cafe.

Why does everyone seem to think people hate IE? I personally prefer FF or Opera but the majority of the people I know are happy with IE. People who create sites for FF only are idiots. A site should work in all browsers and look the same (or as similar as possible).

I see comments in forums all the time like: "don't worry about it, no one uses IE". I am sure it isn't only my stats that prove that comment totally wrong.

To the original question: It was probably around 10-11 years ago when I was in primary school. We had to send an email to one of our teacher's sons. That was about the same time my parents got their first pc.

First online with BBSs at 300 baud, then on fidonet, which linked BBSs together at 450 baud (courtesy of a hack for the 300 baud modem).
Then, jumped ship to the internet when it was text based and domains all came from one source at $100 each. mg:

The first time I remember seeing the Internet was around 97-98. Oh how times have changed. From playing games online to IE to Fire Fox! Apparanetly there is something new called the grid coming out soon!

Very cool thread. The first time I saw it was in college in '92 through the school's BBS.

Cant remember the year, but I also had my first experiences during the days of the BBS's I remember there was a few BBS's in town that I could call into without long distance charges. I also ran a "WildCat" BBS from my home, with an unused PC and a second phone line.

Those were the days when it used to take a good 3 to 4 minutes to download one picture, and since the BBS's were all text, there was no thumbs, so you would download it with out knowing, if you was gonna like the pic or not, so each time was a gamble.

I've been online sense '98 also

I have been online since 2005. It all started with an online game my friends played at school that I started playing at my house.

It was called Dinky Bomb (weird name, awesome game). But Atari bought it out and closed it down.

hah, I didn't know what it was for a couple of years, I just thought it was some program that came with the computer. My first internet "package" came bundled with Netscape 3 so I used that all the time, it wasn't till I started getting around a bit on the internet that I realised what IE was :eek:

My first time was in 8th std back in 1999 , used to watch porn pics , in a cafe using 56k connection shared with 5 computers awesome speed

I don't remember my first experience..

Either in class, where we had to look up lessons online,
or when I got my first pc, with the 4gig harddrive that I thought was pimp.

It confused the hell outta me! I sat on excites search page for about half an hour, completely confused

I honestly do not remember.

I don't even remember. I think I just looked images of puppies up on Google. Puppies are cute.

I have no idea, think it was in pre-school or most likely at my dads work. But we got it at home about 10 years ago I think.

About 1993 at university. Netscape was the browser and Excite was the search engines of choice at the time then later it was Alta Vista and Lycos.

That was a long time ago maybe late 90's if only i knew then what i know now.

If only I knew about domains in the 90's ...

probably my most reminiscent memory is of playing on coffeebreakarcade...so it's not too old. And always having the dial-up connection beeping.

I have no idea when it is when i first viewed the internetwebz. Prob about 1999. i got my first computer 1 year before

Eight years ago.. Inet Cafe... First email account...

dude, lol, same here, 56k net connection, watching po*n pics in a cafe, which after that visited regularly.

I think it was around 1993 or 1994. Logged on using a GNN account, they later got bought out by AOL.
