Thread: How fast is your Internet connection?

Normally I can watch youtube videos and browse around with no major problems, but the last couple of days have been absolutely dire.

With RHM showing hers (here) I thought I'd show mine. Checked at mybroadbandspeed.co.uk.

This is supposed to be a 2MB connection I think. It's not broadband but 'eversoslightlywiderthandialupband' speed.



Anyone know how accurate these speed checkers are? Is my bandwidth being throttled by Virgin Media?

I did the math, that is no where near 2MB.
have you called them on it?

dl: 436kbps up:293 kbps

speed checkers are quite accurate. Mine always shows 2.5MB when in fact it should be 3MB but AT&T is screwing me over.

Well that test is around 11mbps out. This is more accurate:


That is MB and not Mbit. So that was around 15mbps. Does peak up around 18 sometimes. My upload is 90 - 100 KB/s.

You might find this interesting. My gf phoned just before 7pm and was told that she had to be at the computer. Not having a cordless phone, he took her mobile number, would run a "few checks" and phone her right back. He then asked her to access a demo file on Virgin Media's site to see what the transfer rate was. She told him what was on the screen and he said that was completely in line with a 2mb broadband connection speed. He also said that it was probably the server on the site we had been trying to access (all of them?? :eek and that those free broadband speed checkers were rubbish.

After 2 days of dodgy dial up speed shenanigans, right after putting the phone down we ran another speed check on the same one we checked at before. Lo and behold it was up again. Before call in blue, after call in bold black:

I've heard the speed checkers could be biased (probably the one he had you run!!!!) As far as rubbish I don't think so. I bet he was just CHA (covering his ascii)

I'm surprised the bugger didn't try to get you to upgrade the service like RHM last week

Even at top speed you are all faster than the connection I have here...

but DANG IT ALL it's gone again. They must have flipped that switch back again.

The operator didn't get us to run a speed check but asked us to download a file and see what the transer rate was. The file was here:

and asked us to click on:

Tried it again just right now and it was going to take over and hour and a half to download!

I'm currently on wireless connection, so the speeds are little bit lower than if I would plug in the cable.

Almost 7 megabytes of download speed and half of 1 megabytes upload speed.

Mine is a 256/128 connection. Pretty slow when compared to you guys.!!

Mine is 5mbps.

Most of the time I'm on AT&T wireless GSM in a location that it doesn't like.
Imagine if you will a crippled turtle crawling through partially frozen molasses.

Hence another reason I spend a lotta time at Barnes & Noble.

That's definitely worth a phone call or two. I'd be asking them WTF is going on.
Maybe suggest they bill you at the same percentage as your advertised connection speed vs. your actual connection speed? :twisted:

Passed my internet bandwith atm. So Im on dial up speeds. Its really painful. 3GB bandwith for the loss. Although Im upgrading to 20 GB soon

Stupid Telecom. Charge me $40 a month for capped speeds and 3GB bandwith. Im trying to convince my dad to change to vodafone.
