Default Can someone explain proxy sites?

I know what a proxy site is, but I don't know why people want to run them.

How does someone make money running a proxy site?

a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) that acts as a go-between for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. The proxy server evaluates the request according to its filtering rules.

    Thanks Zeruel,

I actually knew that part. The part I don't understand is why people (webmaster) want to setup proxy websites for people to use.

    How do they make money?

I thought about setting up a proxy website before, and making money from the adverts. However, since you would be the proxy for all the traffic your advertisers (google, yahoo, msn or whatever) would see all the traffic (impressions) coming from your own IP since you are the proxy.

Obviously they are not going to permit that because it looks like you are just generating your own impressions and clicks.

So how can someone make money with a proxy site?

One thing I was thinking would be if you have a webpage, someone enters the URL they want and it will act as a proxy for them.

However, any adverts on the page could be set not to go through the proxy. Dunno, it seems strange to me how you can have adverts showing when you are the proxy...

In proxy sites you can run many adds. So the webmasters will make good cash out of the ads.
