Thread: Chrome OS

So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

This is a very great move for Google. Let's watch and see if they will be successful on this thing as well.

This will be interesting if in the process they secure support from some of the big names, after all, if it is only aimed at those mostly surfing the web, web designers, and any one else wanting to do a little more than just web surfing, will be left out.

But, if they can get support from software manufactures, and all the good games and software apps run on it, then and only then, they might challenge the Beast of Redmond!

The fact that Google is becoming more involved in the Linux camp, will definitely help!!

One thing is for sure, internet is one click away with that OS.

I like it. its alike everybody is back to square one on chrome os customization and programming.

Wow...Google sure does know how to make some big, unexpected moves. This ought to be pretty interesting but 2010 seems so far away lol.

Actually I have installed Google Chrome OS and I love it!!! Some graphic design are great, and GNOME is my favorite!!! :energetic: Ubuntu is young Linux distribution and really moving fast.Google seems to have opportunity to make the best OS and I'm following it, for the moment we still need Ubuntu docs (great community) but the good point it that now they have to make some scripts for normal users that can't use command line for install a simple pluggin into Firefox Google can maybe open Linux to the public...

Getting this as soon as it's available. Gonna be sweeeeeeeeet.

It will be interesting to see if software companies invest development dollars to develop for the new platform/os they may not see it as a "profitable" market if its based on open source low cost.

A alternative to Windows would be great! I don´t like windows at all!

I want windows programs to run on Chrome OS. Since it based on LINUX Im bit worried. I hope Google will solve this using wine.

I have use Chrome before but I already removed them in my computer since it occupies large space in my laptop and every time I use 3 browser IE , firefox and Chrome sometimes it loads so slow than the others and I dont know why it happens?

The question is how long before Google targets desktops with Google Chrome. I've heard one of their real pushes with Chrome OS is to get more people using Google Docs.

I doubt it'll cost a lot and I think they may be giving it for free. Google can afford to practically give it away if Chrome OS does manage to push more people towards using Google's online services.

This is one more step by Google which is really good. I love to use this Google Chrome OS.
