Thread: what is the best firewall software???

I need one and I dont know which is the best one. can you guys help me out?

Well I just use the default firewall in windows, I just set the security settings high.

The Windows firewall has too many vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malicious web sites. For a free firewall I suggest going to download.com and obtaining Sygate.

You can try using Dedicated Cisco ASA 5510, 5520 etc... which are bit expensive but they worth.

I use windows firewall, its pretty good..

I've read too much about the bugs and holes in Windows Firewall. I like Kaspersky Internet Security, or Sygate for a free one.

After I read vectro post I installed Sygate. I really think you should too. I never new all that was going on with windows firewall.

Good move. Sygate gives you more control over each application on your PC, too. You might also want to disable Windows Firewall since you don't need that if you have Sygate.

I'm running Win 7 is I disable Windows Firewall will I get another stupid balloon warning? This one saying firewall not installed.

You can disable the baloon warnings, too. I'm not sure how in Windows 7 but if it can be done in XP and Vista I'm sure it can be done in 7.

Currently my router has a firewall, and most of my computers are running simple Windows firewall. I know Windows firewall is not very good, but it's better than nothing, plus the hardware firewall built into the router i"m sure helps to an extent

Router Firewalls do create an external layer of security at the perimeter of your network, but are usually fairly permissive so as not to prevent PC's on the network from doing what they need to do.

Is a router a usb thing? How would a laptop use it or can it?

I just got my connection no more Free wifi I connect through a Huawei EC168 wireless net card from Alltel where ever I get bars I now have internet.

$60 a mo with a 2 yr contract. Now I can be online anywhere.

If you use cellular wi-fi you don't need to worry about having a router. Alltel has a big router on their end. If you get a cable modem or DSL it is usually a bad idea to plug your computer directly into those. It is a better idea to put a router into the modem, then connect your computer(s) to the router. Routers allow multiple computers to share the same Internet connection/IP. Routers also usually have firewalls that all of the computers on the network can hide behind.

As for different IPs, that's up your ISP and how they handle that.

You can easily check your ip online, there are sites that make it easy.

A router is usually connected via your network, mine for instance is a wireless router. Cable modem connects to the primary router, which in turn handles 2 phone lines, some direct wired connections to my network and wireless for my notebooks. I also once in awhile daisy chain another one in for other purposes.

Comodo Firewall and Comodo Firewall are pretty good.Both of them are popular.If you can afford it,you can also
try hardware firewall,sometimes it's more effective.But maybe it's more expensive too.Well,for network security,
firewall plays an important part.However,you should also pay attention to other aspects.

I would like to asked can anyone recommend a free firewall which is good for my laptop?? I am currently using VISTA

I'm also using a windows firefall and I guess it safe. As long I'm taking care of my computer by securing any downloads files.

as far as i'm concern, i use KIS, i'm very much happy with it till now.

Avira Support Suite, I haven't receive any complain.
Anyway, I have never received virus on my pc.

The thing is simple, I have 2 accounts in different groups.
While I work, surft do whatever, I use a Guess account let say.

If I need to install something, I just go with Administrator account.

In that way, If guess download any kind of virus that my affect system, after restarting all changes will be back to normal and virus deleted. It is like a deep freeze but with more advantages.

I prefer Norton. I just like the features and have never had a problem with it.

windows default is OK for me... its light and effective.

Zone alarm is a good option, i tried it and enjoy its protection.

I've been using Zone Alarm for close to 10 years now. It's not "the best" but it's good for a free firewall.

I do not recommend trusting your Routers hardware firewall - it only blocks incoming attacks. The best reason to have a software firewall is an extra layer of confidence - should your virus protection software fail to prevent a trojan horse from infecting your system (even the best can't catch everything) that trojan will soon try to dial home possibly sending your passwords (to be decrypted on the other end - windows passwords and any browser saved passwords to your online banking or shops containing your credit card info, your email - everything needed for fraud or identity theft) - with a software firewall on the right settings you'll get a pop up of any new programs trying to access the internet. Meaning you have the chance to manually deny the trojan access to the net to send your information home.

In my opinion zone alarm pro is the best firewall software exists now. It is simple to install and easy to use. It combines the firewall with identity protection and anti-spy ware software.

For me windows firewall is also enough to protect my pc from harmful files such as viruses. Windows firewall + updated anti-virus = well protected PC.

Have you every tried ipcop? or wolverine it is great software and google will help you find more. for email you have spamcop too

Windows Firewall has some vulnerabilities that viruses can break through. It's better to disable it and replace it with a free one like Sygate or a paid one like Kaspersky.

I generally use the Windows firewall and I think it is the best one.
