Windows Vista ensures that the firewall starts at boot. The firewall protection in Windows Vista is a little different wherein the interface has been divided into 2 levels.

There is a basic configuration, which is default, and an advanced configuration. The basic interface looks very similar to Windows XP SP2 firewall and is turned on by default. This works fine in most cases.

Firewalls don't usually protect against viruses, they protect against other types of network intrusions.

That's what I think. I troubleshoot a lot of computers and I'm surprised at the amount of garbage that slips through it.
