OMG !
i think it's fake...

They're betting on the idea that this milliondollarwiki website will become a big deal and drive a lot of traffic to their website.
Some great words are not taken yet, but it's too much of a gamble.

For just one page ?!
Its rediculous amount of money,
It does not even have backlinks yet ?!
LOL, a good idea, but who would pay that much for a page? Plus, the site does not even work....
Looks like good marketing to me.

Holy crap! Who let Gobbles back in here?

Yeah looks like a fake if you look at the bidders but it's a perfect example of buzz marketing. We looked at the auction didn't we? We also looked at the site too, right?
There are other auctions like this on ebay but with real bidders. I'll try finding the seller that lists auctions like a fortune cookie for $10,000, or a coolaid packet for $5000. Details of the auction state once you pay, the seller will refund the entire amount and give you bonuses such as a $500 amazon gift certificate. The seller makes money when people visit his website & buy his ebooks on.. you guessed it... "How to make money with ebay"
Listing & bidding on auctions like this give you exposure since everyone talks about it & visits to check it out for themselves. This leads to them visiting the seller and buyer's profiles which normally reference their website or others auctions they have listed where they sell ebooks or some money making idea.

Colleen, how did you initially find out about that auction? I'm trying to determine how these sellers get the initial buzz going. I don't think by simply listing a high priced auction it's going to get the interest of others. They gotta plant the seeds somewhere to start the buzz.
Did you read it in a blog post or perhaps a press release?

I read about it at Webmaster Forum (v7n)
That auction is either fake or there is a few people bidding that has more money than sense.

Yeah, some people bid on anything over there. I remember the onemilliondollarhomepage.com site. The last 100 pixel block went for around $30,000 I think. That was no where near worth that. I guess they must have had most of their traffic not from the 100 pixel ad block that they bought, but from the actual media for being so stupid for buying that advertising block for so much. lol

No one ever said it had to be a good idea to be successful. It seems that on the net the most successful sites are ugly and the simplest ideas draw the most traffic. But yes, I have animosity towards such things as well...
I think the saddest part is this:

Lol. Some people really do bid one useless stuff. If they have so much money to waste, why don't they give it to use or charity.
