I almost find it funny that people actually care about PR.. Really all PR is a PR (public relations) move by Google to force their rules on webmasters. It's an arbitrary number any little tweak to their algorithm can have massive effects on millions of sites.

The system is biased this is evidenced by Wikipedia being in the top 5 for almost every search I've done. Lots of Wikipedia pages have PR 6/7/8, those pages don't have tons of back links going to them. Why do they rank so high? Google likes wikipedia.

.edu sites also get extra rank. I'll give Google credit here, lots of .edu have good non-monetized content on them but on the flip side most universities give computer studies students web space.. There's a bunch of personal pages on lots of edu sites, all those pages get a PR boost because it's a .edu and therefore any outgoing links are inherently trusted.

Add this to the fact that they've manually penalized people like John Chow, I don't even know the guy but if he wants to sell text links, it's his site and his right.

Then add to that the fact that Google penalizes sites with affiliate links.

You will see how much BS page rank is. Manual overrides break the system. If their PR algorithm doesn't account for the possibility of paid links or that a .edu page can be a link farm just as easily as a .info then their algorithm is broken, they need to fix it.. Webmasters don't need to nofollow links because Google cannot figure out how to overcome the problem.

When Google gives Wikipedia more weight just because it's wikipedia, that's wrong.

Just curious here, does anyone see a pattern with Google and the PR penalties?

Google is dropping the PR of sites that have affiliate links & that sell text links. All advertising that Google would pick up if the webmaster subscribed to adsense, which cannot compete with payments from private sponsors.

Wikipedia has no advertising, therefore it's not a threat to Google's adsense/adwords.

I've said it before paid links were here way before Google came on the block in form of banner ads and they will be here long after Google drops from it's #1 spot.

Ahhh PR, the on going pursuit of a silly little green bar, that pretty means nothing at all. There have been sites going up and down, although my personal site did rather well to stick (my couple of web directories however weren't quite as lucky). There has been a lot of discussion over paid links and decreasing (as per Matt Cutts) however in all honesty im leaning away from PR - PR is not where the money is... SERPs is a hell of a lot more important!!!

: Such sudden drops in page rank are nothing more than attempt by google to recover lost revenue from Google Adsense ads on the heels of the weak real estate market and growing text link market. It is estimated that google is losing hundreds of millions of Adwords revenue from the drop in real estate and mortgage-related Adwords campaigns where they were getting an average of $6/click during the peak.

Google has always masked the payout from Adsense ad sharing to their Adsense customers. The reason is now apparent. Just recently there has been quite a chatter on the web regarding the sudden drop in payout from Adsense every month across the board. It is now estimated that google is taking as much as 90% of all Adsense revenue up from when they were sharing as much as half

Yup, all this makes me sick. Just look the way Matt Cutts is smirking at webmasters

    Halloween 2007: LOLCat

Of course, he is happy because Google's share price just reached $700 and his shares have just gone up by tens of millions. But this will over the dead bodies of lots of honest working small webmasters. Has anybody got a ferocious pitbull around?

Coming from an insider, if you have a really high traffic site, you can contact Google and have get a higher ad share rate.
The same goes for Overture/Yahoo. But, you have to have really high and good traffic, they don't do this for everyone.

I cannot see a discernable drop in Adsense earnings, bearing in mind that the summer months tend to be slow for most businesses. But whatever action Google takes is always for their own profits. They are one of the greediest companies I have seen in terms of business practices.
