It's almost as if you answered your own question in your head as a new post on the forums.

It's also a very basic tip in SEO.

No wonder I was confused.

Directory submission is just one way of building links. Forum / blog participation, Social Bookmarking, etc...

Best backlinks that you could opt for are the ones that are organically gained, i.e. - other sites linking to your site for seeing relevance and value in your site So focus on that more

Sure, directories are one good way to develop links. If possible, try to find niche or regional directories too, because the traffic can be of a higher quality, because it is more likely to be in your niche or area.

Directory submission is one way to build links, but I would consider it one of the least effective. Your much better off promoting your quality content on sites that have interested visitors. If you own a blog participate/comment in other blogs, plug your site modestly on forums, etc.

We are already familiar with the basic SEO tips you said, but thanks for the thoughts Maddy submitting to quality and relevant directories help you increase your PR, but the one that will give traffic to your site was the off page optimization.

If those directories are well-maintained and SEOed, chances are they would stay longer and would eventually develop their PR. For me directory inclusion is a long term investment and does not always help you immediately in your SEO.

It'll take for a while to achieve your links from directories so you should also try some worthy link building methods i.e. Article Submission to trusted and well-known article sites like ezinearticles.com, etc., Social Bookmarking, Press Releases - they can help in terms of getting some good links and traffic too

This is a stupid thread, however it is pretty much the only free way of link building unless you are incredibly imaginative and create a viral marketing campaign.

I did put in input, however there is very little constructive conversation to be had out of "Link directories = link development" ... I thought everyone knew that? Definately the best route to go on a limited budget.

Thought I would pop in here after joining a while ago to learn something new. That was not what I expected to learn. LOL

However, you are right, directories are great to build links but they can only get you so far. You need to get quality relevant links from related niche sites and so some great on page SEO to really see your site fly. Of course, number one is to add quality original content.

Directories mainly add more links to your backlinks list. They arent usually quality. They usually help you get your site crawled faster.

I am agree with you. If it don't give quality backlink but it gives traffic which is really useful
