Thread: Link Exchange is pointless

And it has been pointless for months.

Google does not give any juice for link exhcange and therefore you will not benefit in rankings on SERPs or PR.

The only thing link exchanges are good for is traffic via referals. Then you have to weigh up the benefits of the exchange to see if people will actually exit your page to a better competitor.

Just thought you all should know, I hear people asking for link exchanges in footers where you won't benefit AT ALL. Keep this in mind.

The only successful way to do link exchanges is by doing it three way. I link to your site and you link to my site from another site. That way, Google does not see a link exchange.

However, if you do a direct link exchange, make sure it is a related niche and relative to your site. You will at least have the benefit of the advertising and often times those do carry juice.

Of course, when building links, always look for the traffic not the PR juice.

You are so wrong here, it all depends on the site. And the more banners around the net that you have the chance of someone clicking on you. I know on all my sites I have talked to people who have clicked on the banners on my footers and had a look.

Social networking sites, adding a banner is a great idea, as I get people who go from page to page and with about 500 hundred and more pages on my site, thats a heck of a lot of times your banner can be seen. And because of the way its setup, the whole page is read or browsed.

Google can figure out anything if they want to. It is a much betetr way than doing direct link exchanges.

There's no difference between reciprocal link exchanges and 3 way link exchanges in the eyes of Google.
Mathematically, a three way exchange is pretty much just as easy to detect, so they don't fool anyone.

In other words, a reciprocal link with a related website would be more beneficial to both sites than a three way with sites that have no relation to each other.

I disagree. With that logic even if I do not exchange links, I could be penalized for a link that could be connected to me in another way without my knowledge.

I did state in my first post to link with sites that are related to your niche.

I personally do very little link exchanges because I do not like to offer a link for a link. However, many people still benefit from them. I have seen blogs gain high PR from almost all link exchanges. It does work for some and to totally discount it would be a mistake in my opinion.

No. Penalties and passing PR are two different things.
You can't be penalized for links pointing to you, but Google can remove any benefit they may have had.

You also stated that post in such a way so as to suggest that three way linking was inherrantly better than reciprocal exchanges. The links should be from related sites in any case.

Wrong. Reciprocal exchanges with related sites can and do pass juice and there are traffic benefits as well. People are more likely to click on the link if it's a related site.

It should also be noted that all of this is algorythm dependant and doesn't take manual "corrections" into account.

Ok now I think we are arguing the same points.

One way link exchage is good but reciprocal linking are not harmful. keep in mind. linking grab traffics and SERPs

yes, one way and reciprocal link exchange are good. for better result in reciprocal link exchange avoid link exchange with link farm and banned sites. link exchange helps in increasing SERP....

link exchanges with a few sites that are related to yours and of good quality will always help your site.

Well now google recognizes these kind of links but it can help if some of the websites whith which you are exchanging links if they are doing good and you can get traffic directly from them.

So with the argument going on, what do you suggest guys? Don't ever do link exchange then? What's another alternative for link exchange? Paid links? :|

Reciprocal linking are good, But one way link exchage is better i think

I know that link exchanges aren't pointless at all otherwise our PR3 blog wouldn't be where it is with not only the page ranking but the traffic it receives because when we started out, we started out at the bottom and all I did were exchanges so it contributes just as much as advertisements in my opinion.

Google doesn't penalize link exchanging, but it doesn't count as an extra backlink to your site when you do a 1-1 link exchange. Why? Just like link sales, link exchanges should not be done to pass PageRank.

Link exchanges can provide sites with targeted traffic, which is its purpose. Google won't penalize a link exchange, but it also won't benefit.

Link exchanges are NOT pointless at all

The problem comes when one judges the value of a link exchange on nothing but assumed PR value. That should not be your motivation for a link exchange.

If you exchange links with the right sites you can significantly increase your traffic which is much more important than PR and far from pointless.

When you are doing three way link exchange, the most important thing is not getting links from site that exist only for giving links

Link exchanging for the purpose of developing traffic flow is a great tool.

Link exchanging for the purpose of manipulating PR is what is pointless.

if you think link exchange is pointless then stop doing it.. why don't you try another way to promote your website.. the best thing to do when optimizing a website is have patience and work hard on it..

I reread your original post and maybe I am misunderstanding but I do not get the idea of "Link exchanging for the purpose of developing traffic flow is a great tool." from your post.

If you have a good content based site and you exchange links with another similar site you can benefit greatly by getting an increase in traffic.

I still consider doing Link Exchange but of course, I set standards on how I exchange links.

But I give priority to these two: Being indexed on SEs and it doesn't have "excessive" links on their link page.

It still not pointless as what others see it. There are still other benefits you can get on link exchange. Like traffic.

How many visitors per day a Link Exchange can bring?

There really isnt a solid answer to a question like that. Its almost the same as asking "how much can I make with AdSense?" It could be anywhere from 0 to thousands of people per day.

Some of the major drawbacks of Link Exchange are mentioned below:
No Guarantee - Swapping links doesn’t guarantee any form of search engine high ranking. In fact, search engines may often seek to devalue link exchanges.

Link Deletion - Link Partners can delete another’s link from their site as this will decrease the count of outbound links from their site. This is one of the major drawbacks in doing link exchange.

Penalize - Google can penalize your site especially if your site is linked to a site that is banned or penalized by google.
