Default Linking Internally - How important is it?

I have seen many good bloggers linking their posts internally.

I have always wondered whether this helps or not.

Besides, how do they do it? It is so painful to keep a note of the urls of the things you are posting in your current post and then link back to them.

Is their some automated plugin in wordpress or blogger that does this thing easy?

    Thanks.

They do this for two reasons. To build up the internal pagerank of their blog, to lead both visitors and search engine robots to old content.

Search engine robots spider a site by following the links. Linking to other content, especially old content, on your blog ensures that everything gets spidered by the robot.

Additionally, you get new visitors to your blog everyday. Very few will go back and read what you've got in your archives. So in order to draw attention to your old posts, you have to link to them in new posts that you write.

Some blogger have a "Best Of" list of posts in their side bars. Some bloggers, including myself, write follow up posts to previous articles. For example, you write an article about the importance of widgets in the blogosphere. Some days, weeks, months later you would then write a follow up post about how other bloggers are putting the widgets to good use on their blog.

I don't know if there is a plugin or not that will do this. I think there is a WordPress plugin that will link certain keywords to your archive pages but I'm not 100% sure. You would have to search the WordPress Plugin Repository to find out.

That's a very nice piece of information for a newbie like me. Thanks a ton. Will have to look for the specific plugin that can do this job for me. Because otherwise it will be a herculean task if I have to go and manually do it for my previous posts.

Good stuff Arwen, I am one of those who do the "my best posts" making sure to give my best work an extra helping of link juice rather than links through my archieves only. Really though I probably don't format my internal link structure as well as I should, but it is good to send links to your self. Now what I do is when writing a post on one of my many blogs is to send plenty of links to all my work whether it is a squidoo page or a full blown website. This has helped greatly in Googles SERPs.

It's always best to link internally using manual method rather than automatic.

Link Building is an important part of Search Engine Optimization, and is a practice of getting other websites to link to yours. Link Building with quality backlinks is amongst many important aspects considered by search engines, while determining the rankings of a site. Therefore, creating backlinks is one of the most important tasks you can undertake to promote your website with the search engines.

When it comes to using the Search Engine Optimization technique for a website, Links pointing to a particular website is one of the most dominant off-page factors. Link building is vital but at the same time, a very lengthy and extensive task to perform. The reason why many webmasters are on a lookout for some shortcut options or erroneous methods to increasing backlinks, as most of them do not have the time and the endurance to carry out a genuine link building campaign.

There are many ways in which Link Building can be performed. Some are genuine while some are incorrect methods. The quantity of the backlinks can also be increased by using dishonest techniques like cloaking, redirecting and adding hidden content in to the web pages. This is the reason why the search engines do not give much weightage to the quantity or the number of links pointing to a website, but, to the quality of the links, while measuring the Link Popularity of a site.

Search engines mainly give credits to quality links and it is with the help of these links that they determine whether or not, a website is relevant for a particular search. Quality backlinks also help Search Engine in determining the rankings for your site. Especially Google gives a lot of preference to good and relevant backlinks, while ranking a site.

Internal linking helps search engine crawler to crawl the entire website. Apart from that it helps to pass the PR value to all internal pages.

Internal linking is very usefull, for everything above said, and increasing pageviews! Read this - when I started to visit one seo blog, I caught myself clicking on every single link the guy posted. I wanted to know everything, and he knew how to make everything connected. Imagine, if in first three rows of post you put for example 5 anchor links - you'll probably get a lot of clicks. Every word that is somehow conected to your blog - link internaly, it will also rank higher on google.

Is too much of interlinking harmful? I mean what should be the safety limit of internal links within a post? Any ideas?

You can use blogpig plugin for this. It will automatically parse the words that are already being used as tags in your recent posts.

Also, you can install auto-onlywire and auto-tweeter plugins. These can can give unlimited backlinks right after you post.

internal linking for your site is essential to rank better for more keywords rather than listing high for home page alone.

Yes, I don't think there's any automated plugin to do this, but I do think it helps considerably with the search engines. Not as much as inbound links will, but it helps show the search engines which of your posts you value the most and it can help the rankings slightly, plus it's great to give visitors links to other posts that they may be interested in.

So how do you people go about linking internally? Can these blogging platforms be of much help to track back to our posts and search the posts relevant to the post we are working on currently? I mean how do I remember if I have more than 500 posts and I am making some post on Nigerian Scams today and I have a slightly fading memory that I made one post on this topic in the past. So how do I go back and find out the URL for that? Any suggestions to make this process easy? Thanks in advance.

Well in Wordpress, what I would do is just copy the link of the url, it would only take a second. Go to your pages menu, search for the post and copy the link, that seems simple enough. You could also go to the front-end and search for the term, copy the url from the address bar and paste it into the editor.

Do you mean to say we have to do it while posting our posts?

Rest of the method you explained was quite obvious and I am aware of that. My only concern was whether there is some other better method to save time and still be able to find the most relevant posts.

I don't think the in build wordpress SEARCH is so good at searching the posts. Google Custom Search bar works the best to search for any post.

    Thanks for the help.

It's not a compulsion to say THANKS using a post. This forum makes it easier for you by just clicking on the THANKS button below the poster you wish to say THANKS to. So please stop filling up the space with such posts which do not add up to the discussion and dump the threads with signature links.

Besides, how do they do it? It is so painful to keep a note of the urls of the things you are posting in your current post and then link back to them.

Is their some automated plugin in wordpress or blogger that does this thing easy?

    Thanks.
Wordpress blogs have lots of plugins that links page internally. Doing this is relevant because you can still give backlinks to your pages and Google will still count them as backlinks.
