Thread: Internet Marketing Terminology - 15 Key Terms

Internet Marketing can be a daunting thought for any business, especially when you constantly hear terms such as Social Engine Optimisation (SEO), Social Media Optimisation (SMO), blog, domain name, ranking algorithms, Really Simple Syndication (RSS) etc. To help you understand what they key Internet Marketing terms are, I have devised a list of 15 terms you need to know:
Affiliate Marketing
Where you associate with other websites (by paying them) to sell your products and services and advertise on their site.
Back linking
A link coming from another website to your own. These are crucial to the success of your SEO as major search engine spiders use these backlinks to rank your site compared to others (when searching particular keywords).
Blogs
Aka Web Logs. Allows you to publish short entries and information on a regular basis. A form of Social Media.
Content Management System (CMS)
An application that allows you to edit the content on your website without having to worry about HTML. CMS can be internal or open source.
Domain Name
Your website address.
Flash
Graphics and animation that move on your website. It can be interactive. A great way to show videos on your website.
Google
The biggest search engine in the world. Google should be the basis for any SEO campaign.
Pay Per Click (PPC)
A marketing strategy whereby your business pays for advertising only based on the amount of clicks to your website. Mostly used on major search engines. Can be very expensive if managed incorrectly or not supervised.
Ranking Algorithms
All search engines have ranking algorithms. They are all different. They determine where your keywords rank in comparison to your competitors.
Really Simple Syndication (RSS)
A text file that provides subscribers and readers with directly fed content.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Highly specialised process of strategies applied to your website to make it rank higher than your competitors for certain keywords. Best to seek the advice of an expert when considering an SEO campaign.
Social Media Optimisation (SMO)
The intention of attracting new and unique visitors to your website through interaction on social networks such as Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. SMO works in conjunction with SEO and both are designed to increase the traffic directed to your website.
Spam
Information that is constantly submitted repeatedly in an effort to mass-market. It is unsolicited mail that often ends up in your recycle bin. The use of spam for SEO is known as a 'black-hat method' and can result in your website being ignored by major search engines such as Google.
Web 2.0
Interactive websites designed to encourage chat, postings and discussion. Facebook is a good example of a Web 2.0 site.
Wordpress
The most popular blogging program in the world. Very easy to learn and use.
Ok, so now you should have an idea of what all these terms mean. They are simply complicated names for basic functions and programs. If you are ever unsure of what an Internet Marketing term means, be sure to research it. At the end of the day it is probably something really simple.

How about one of the "key" IM terms, if you'll pardon the pun - keyword research. When I first started looking at IM, I had no idea what a "keyword" was. A definition could be something like - "A term entered into a search engine when a user is searching for something online". I'm sure somebody could come up with a better definition, but you get the idea, hopefully.
