No, I don't. No they're not beneficial. Not to anyone.
Not beneficial at all, if anything they are harmful IMO
I had one of those link farms back in 2002, lol. they were useful to spam Search engines and get many backlinks back then, but now if you want to see your site die in SEs.. go for it..

would link farms be considered an off-shoot of blackhat type stuff?
I kill all my plants anyway, so I will not be farming :P

I don't think it can be considered an off-shoot of blackhat as there's no benefit to/from link farms.

most directories are crap too and I believe having too many links from forums and directories can actually hurt you in Google.

I have to differ with you there.
The more directories your site is in, the better you will rank.
The trick is, not to get too many links from directories in a short period of time.
Best links from directories are the paid sponsor links that are sitewide.
And forum links are super!
There time is gone past now. This is not 2004. DO NOT waste a single minute on them.

^ LOL LinkMetro. Been there done that, how annoying! Nothing but crap sites always wanting a link and doing mass submissions to you at once. Used to drive me nuts. It was a pain to get unlisted in there too for me, had to contact them directly multiple times telling them remove my sites!

wow I thought those were long gone. STAY AWAY!
I know many a webmaster who use link farms. However, they are also clueless to Google's potential and probably could give a damn about pagerank.
If your question is pertaining to their SEO benefit then no they aren't good, so STAY AWAY. You will lose any good SERP rankings and your pagerank if the big G catches you.
Not really that bad to link to other sites that have value - for your visitors. Keeping it minimal though draws the line.

dont never ever try it,google gonna get u
Plain and simple, smart link farms work. Same with any "blackhat" tactic. Intelligently applied, they can boost sites up for a VERY VERY long time. Unfortunately, 99% of people are too lazy to set them up right.

Looking at most seo websites they don't reccomend link farms. I have noticed that many link farms have a google page rank of n/a all grayed out which usually means they have been banned by google. I think it would hurt you to link to that link farm. It is better to trade links with a website with a similar theme to yours and has a higher page rank.
I prefer to stay away from link farms in my practice, because they are not loved by Google.
Link farms suck. Both for you and your page rank.
Google may even blacklist you for it.
Use them at your own risk.
I think link farms are frowned on these days. Just build your links with forum posts and article marketing instead. Directories are also another good option.
This is not good idea!
