Hey!
Just wanted to let everyone know, that Google updated PR for new sites. I dont think they changed anything that had a pr, but if you had a PR of 0, then your pr was updated!!!

Download the Google toolbar, and there is a bar that says pagerank, or just search for google pr checker, and find a site like:Originally Posted by RWD

Yeah, thanks, I have went from a PR of 0, I presume as the site is new, to a PR of 2 for the forums. So what does it all mean?
that means, that in google's opinion, your site is a 2/10 popular, which is not great, but will surely increase as your forum becomes bigger and bigger. The most pr you will ever get will probably be a pr of 7, if you work real hard. the only 9s and 10s are huge companies like google and cnet and yahoo, and sites like that

Thanks for posting this.
I see. I'll work as hard as I can to get at least a 2. That's my goal.
Blah.... Blah... Blah
well to go from nothing to 2 in a month is not bad, quite pleased with it actully lol
Ya, 2 isnt bad for one month, but if you put in a little bit of effort for link exchanges, and other stuff, you could easily go up to like a 4 in the next update, or maybe higher, depending on how much work you put in![]()

My site's homepage didnt change in PR but a ton of my pages jumped to a PR3 and nearly all of my pages have at least a PR1. I guess thats what I get for selling textlinks on my homepage to 0PR sites... oh well.![]()
ya, but its not what sites you link to, that effects your pr, its the sites that link to you.

I'm sorry I believe that is incorrect. The sites that you link to do affect your PR, if you link to poorly rated sites, your site will hurt in rankings as well. It is because YOU as the webmaster have the power to add or remove those links, so you are responsible. However, you are not responsible for links coming from other sites, and those also affect your PR, but thats different.Originally Posted by Jeter4982
think about what you just said. if the sites you link to effect your pr, then why doesnt every single website link to yahoo, google, cnet, and other high pr sites. its what sites link to yours, that makes your site popular, not the other way around.

Yes, backlinks to your website is what effects your google pagerank.
If you want to find out who links to you via google type this in the search box:
link:http://www.yoursite.com
Heh nice point, sorry I forgot to put that part in.Originally Posted by Jeter4982
Linking to other sites will either have no change or negative change, never positive change (as you have just pointed out) in the PR system. However, let me ask you something, why would you not want to link to every 0 PR page out there? Because it would hurt your page ranking. At least that is what is stopping me. It is because google sees that you are in control of good pages, and if you decide to link to poor pages, you may have a poor page as well.
As for inbound links from pages, those give either no change or positive change (I'm pretty sure there is a technicality to that one involving same IP websites). You do not control who links to you as you are not always the webmaster of those other sites, so google can not punish you if poor sites link to you.
But hey, you're the webmaster of your site, and if you wish to exchange links with low PR sites, that's your business.![]()
OK, i still disagree with you for the following reason: your argument does not make sense.
the reason you dont link to pr 0 sites, is that they have no benefit to you, linking to them will not hurt you, it just wont help you. even on googles website, they say if there are 2 websites, website a , and website b. if website a links to website b, then that is seen as a "vote" from website a to website b, NOT the other way around. you can read about it here: http://www.google.com/corporate/tech.html

What is a PR update?
well pr has already been explained, so a pr update, is when they update the pr.

Thats fine, this is a good discussion, why isn't anyone else getting involved??Originally Posted by Jeter4982
Well I still believe that linking to lower PR sites will hurt your rankings - at least for that page you are linking from. I remember reading it on a forum, I think it was WHT, but I cant find the specific thread... As for your google link, if I were google, I wouildn't want to post negative news saying " Oh yea, and if you link to a poor rated site, your link will decrease also." That kind of sentence would be kind of turn the happy google writing a little sour dont you think?

Well if someone can find a professional SEO to come and tell us, then we can all learn the truth whatever it is.
As far as I know, when you link A -> B, and B -> A, it only degrades the "votes" between those two sites because it's considered a link exchange. I haven't heard anything about outgoing links affecting your rank, but it's possible outgoing links to non-related websites could adversely affect rankings if the search engines are trying to counter the new "text link" SEO method.
If you have a lot of outgoing links on a page, does each have less value for the other site?
i think so, to a point. i mean if you have 10000 links on 1 page, then google is going to see your site as a link farm, and probably will put it on its "black list"Originally Posted by bluzman32
i think you are alright up to about 100 total links, but nomore.
