ND - neutral density filters are basically dark glass that help you expose the sky properly (one case).

so if you have a dark subject against a bright sky, it is hard to obtain a proper exposure without wither using a ND filter OR some form of HDR (basically multiple exposures, one for the subject, one for the sky)

or if you remember I have a mega dark one (ND filter), I can do wicked long exposures with it (in full sunlight) , primarily to show the movement of water...remember my pics from VT? waterfalls!

I think AC should be the driver, BD the cranky radio operator (like Danny deVito in Taxi) telling them where to go, and NIN the bagger.
