Default I Need info on creating a page.

I need some info on creating a page for members to login into. I am new to website building. I think that I need a script but I am not sure. I want to add a member section that people will see with a user name and password, and also have a time limit for their membership. I am looking for some help on a few other things but I will ask them later. Thanks.

That's not as simple as it may sound...It's not quite like creating a contact script. You have to make use of cookies and a DB, at the least. What type of things are you going to allow your members to do? (permissions).....What will you allow them to access? How will it benefit your visitors to become members? What special privileges will they have? Sometimes it is simpler to install a script than it is to write one...In some cases, it is necessary to write one, or have one written. Could you provide us with a little more information?

I can give a example to a few sites that do what I am looking to do, but I do no want to get in trouble for posting a link. I am some what of a newbie to everything, I don't want to write a script, I have never done it. I am building a sports service site for gamblers, I want to have daily, monthly, and yearly packages (memberships). Clients will be able to pay via paypal or clickbank, after their payment clears I guess I need them to be able to set up a user name password. Then they will be able to view the days pick. After their membership runs out I will need to delete their user name and password. I am not sure on how to build the secure page for only members to see.

I think that you should start with allowing members to see what they are paying for first...Give away a free membership, then when you become super rich and super famous, you can hold out.....I think that what you are looking for, being commercial in nature, you should consider investing some money in your idea....Get someone to code your site for you..It might cost a couple grand, but, if your idea will ever work, it's gonna cost money first.....

I guess, but I still need to figure out how to create a user-name and password accessible page.

jumpenjuhosaphat is correct, it's a lot more complicated than you think and I am sure there's many readily available free scripts you can use to do this, and with a little modifying you could get them to suit your needs.

I use phplinkdirectory to control a member area, but I can't offer any ideas on the time limited part, I had to pay for a script like that and the script was complicated and confusing, and probably too complex for your needs, it was PHPAudit - PHP Licensing and PHP Distribution. Stable for Four (4) Years.

You could look into Membership software - aMember Pro

If you really want to just write it yourself, there's tutorials out there but I haven't seen one for the time limited part.

If you are in need of a decent beginners tutorial, I used W3Schools Online Web Tutorials for most of what I've learned. Also, PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor is a great resource. For learning about security issues, I would have to recommend Web design, development and marketing - ILoveJackDaniels.com. The last one is pretty important, if you want to keep your scripts and your server safe.

Thank you for the help. I have been doing a little research and I found this program on siteinteractive.com (Account Manager™ Professional) I found the site by looking at the source code on a few sites that do what I'm looking to do. One of the site's is gamedaynetwork.com and another is charliessports.com. The sites themselves are nothing special and the guy that owns one of them is not very computer savvy at all so if he can do it there is no possible way I can't. As far as marketing the site I have a couple years experience and a good idea of what I have to do. Thanks again for all your help and advice.

Default Just to add a twist to things...

You also might want to check out -

    Joomla - Content Management System

and the component plug-in called "AEC"

Joomla! Extensions Directory - Account Expiration Control - Subscription Manager

As mentioned before, it can be, and especially used to be, a very daunting experience. Over the past year it has gotten much easier to add 'subscription' membership and priviledge access. There are more options now.
Also as mentioned AMember is also another option that is used quite often.

But to cover basic requirements you stated and a bit more, Joomla offers a flexible shell and AEC now works well as a good way to handle paying membership. Best yet, it's free.

    Good luck.
