Along with Tizag Tutorials I also use W3Schools Online Web Tutorials for some of my online research. If you have the money I like the Sam's Teach Yourself series. Amazon has a few interesting options Amazon.com: sams teach yourself php But that is person preference, your milage may vary...

I personally never learnt from a book, its pointless, you read 70 pages just to get to the basics. You should never accept jobs without having the expertise in them, but lucky for you PHP is easy to learn.

The first thing to do is understand programming concepts. Like the differentiation between client-side languages (such as Javascript) to server-side languages (just like PHP). Google is very helpful in finding reat resources on PHP.

Don't learn too much PHP without creating simple scripts, such as a calculator, etc. W3schools.com may be helpful for this but don't rush through it, just read a few pages (such as variables, arithmetic operators, etc.), then create your own script. You may also want to look at w3schools.com/php/php_post.asp and w3schools.com/php/php_get.asp]GET in PHP.

There's no standard way of learning PHP but it'll take time and patience. All the technical jargon like arithmetic, comparison operators and variables, etc., will all make sense in time! And btw, when you know enough about PHP go on hotscripts.com and find some basic scripts you can look at, learn and modify (should they be open source) which is beneficial to put your knowledge into action.

PS: The PHP documentation is helpful: php.net/docs

There is no standard place to look, or what standard book to buy. You'll learn slightly different to other people. Google is everything you need .
