PHP books aren't that helpful if the material is very saturated. My advice is to use online tutorials to learn.
You have access to well over 1 million tutorials via Google ALL free. It is the easier and more cost efficient way to learn PHP - even the basics.

I am also agree . Google want you need. And you will get the best tutorials online and free of cost .

Google Books usually has a wide collection of tutorials that are very helpful. That is how I learn in my free time - I run through the tutorials to see what each snippet of code does.
