Notepad++ is a very nice (& free) text editor for windows, it automatically recognizes php, html, xml, and all that good stuff.

I love Notepad++. Definitely my favorite editor of all. I also occasionally use PHP Designer (personal edition), but I prefer Notepad++.

I have used PSPad for the last two years solid...

    http://www.pspad.com

I don't know if they make a version for anything but Windows machines, but there are lots of nice features that make it great for peeps that are new to programming. While it has an extensive tools menu for quick reference to color tables, special characters, code snippets, even hash generators.

The three best features are syntax highlighting, text differences (between two files), the ability to run your local PHP through the editor... not truly integrated debugging, but close.

Do you need a debugger built in? If not get the free ActiveState Komodo Edit, if you want the debugger get ActiveState Komodo IDE.
