A start-up led by former star Google engineers on Sunday unveiled a new Web search service that aims to outdo the Internet search leader in size, but faces an uphill battle changing Web surfing habits.

Cuil (pronounced "cool") is offering a new search service at Cuil that the company claims can index, faster and more cheaply, a far larger portion of the Web than Google, which boasts the largest online index.

Interesting? I run a query using the keyword webtalkforums and the result, this forum was not included on the top result instead outranked by v7n forum and Kalina's blog.

I've read the news on Yahoo the other day about that new search engine - Cuil is claiming that "they are the biggest search engine"

The SERPs look great though i think it still needs more improvement (it lacks search features)

I don't like the magazine-style search results. How are you meant to know what sites are more important? Do you read across the the top row or down the first column? Would be better if they numbered them like everyone else does!

I found them ridiculous, 0 results for unr?
And when they were first up, the search 'sex' returned 250 results. :\

Its too early for us to judge whether it can be more of an authority than Google as it was just newly launched. Personally, I think it would be near to impossible that they would surpass Google.

I do hope google gets some stronger competition, and hopefully they will get better over time.

I wonder how their results are generated.
I did a search on keywords for a relatively new site of mine.
My site doesn't come up on the first page, but a competitor does with MY banner displayed in the listing and it is linked to their website!

It'll take a while, but I think they can probably make it up there with the big guns (msn, yahoo, google). They do need to work on it a lot though.

I was disappointed with the search results. And the way of presenting the information is not the one I like(((

Im not to sure I like the way search results are displayed. But I welcome anything that wants to try and trounce Google

the design is cool, and the SERP is soso. Still very far from taking over google

Yes. there's been alot of hype about this engine, but that's all it's ever going to be for the next few years, hype. Google didn't just become the biggest and best search engine, it took time to gain so many people's trust. It will be a long time before anybody relates searching online with cuil...-.-

Cuil was developed and run by the husband-and-wife team of Stanford professor Tom Costello and former Google search architect Anna Patterson. It pitched as bigger, faster, and better than Google's flagship search engine in pretty much every way. The most important difference between Cuil and Google is its ranking system. Rather than assigning priority to pages based on inbound links as Google does , Cuil analyzes the content of Web pages to divine their relevance to a search query. The most striking new idea is the way search results are formatted. Instead of the ten blue links displayed linearly, Cuil makes better use of the space by using columns. The search engine also shows thumbnails next to some of the results, but they don't always represent images included in the adjacent web page. Another interesting idea is the explorative category section that shows related Wikipedia categories and topics. Cuil has an excellent auto-complete feature and it displays a list of related searches using an design pattern that suggests exploration.

It seems Cuil has faded into the background. Nobody seems to be talking about it now. Although it does have a pretty good Alexa rank still, Probably from all the hype when it was launched. I prefer DAWGSEARCH !!!

I don't think Cuil can surpass Google, Not today or in the near future...

Its fast and great. But less famous. I hope it will come up.

Haha I had forgot about Cuil. All that hype about Cuil taking over the world lol and nobody even mentions them now. Still they have a good Alexa Rank due to all the Publicity they got from people talking about it.

It is a search engine which organizes the web pages by content and displays relatively long entries along with thumbnail pictures for many results.
