Is it important to have hyperlinks on your own webpage with appropriate anchor text?

It sounds like the search engines need this. I have been using .jpg image buttons for my hyperlinks. Maybe that's a mistake?

Can alt tags on the image do the same thing, or do the search engines not see those the same way as anchor text?
