if it's your project then consider changing the keyword. if it's a clients project then they have to understand to rank well it will take time and all aspects of on-page and off-page seo have to be done the right way. there isn't really any special advice or short-cuts in this case that can make beating the competition easy.

First of all you should try to concentrate on forums as well as blogs and articles because these three ways are very fast and reliable to get backlinks and when you will get quality backlinks then obviously you will get boost on search engine position.
