    Default Meta tags

I know that meta tags and descriptions have no effect on your actual optimization and ranking (at least with Google), but they do indeed control the descriptive text in the Search results in Google.

Do you guys take time to devise a relevant and accurate meta description and set of keywords?

If possible and sounds good i put the keywords into my description at maximum with two repetitions. Usually I just try to make the description sound appealing as possible so when it shows up the searcher is more likely to click on my site rather than others.

I still implement it on my sites as far as I am free to do so. It is still part of the On-page optimization. And obviously, there's no harm on putting that up right? You'll never know if it can help you out in a way.

I believe Meta title is important on how your website is ranked the search engines, the search engines use this title and internet searches will refer to this title. Importantly, the Meta title will be underlined in the search results. The title tags is very important, most search engines use this in their search results and this is your first sales pitch to draw in the potential customer.

    Google is not God!

Meta descriptions appeal to humans because they appear in search engine results, and your meta description may be what makes a searcher decide to click on your url instead of someone else's.

I think that makes them pretty important regardless of how much weight they hold in Google's algorithm.

No major search engine requires Titles or Meta Tags. However, when properly constructed, Titles & Meta Tags can boost your search engine traffic. Because of this, it is highly recommended you provide "search engine friendly" Title & Meta Tags on all your Web pages.

Meta tags are quite important and have not to be excluded while coding a page. I make it a point to include meta tags in all headers for better SEO. Though time consuming, it can give you that extra bit of visitors at times..

The Meta tag in html is not a required tag when you're creating your web pages; many pages don't use the tag at all, and I must confess that I've not used it on my home page, although I put it into this page by way of demonstration. To put it briefly, the meta tag is used by search engines to allow them to more accurately list your site in their indexes. Sometimes.
If you simply produce your home page and register the URL with a search engine, or a number of search engines, their spider programmes will (eventually) toddle along to your site to index it. Now, each of the search engines does this slightly differently. Altavista for example will grab everything in your document and index it, but will only show the first 250 characters in its description. Consequently, if your site included say, 'Thanks to:....' right at the beginning, this is what Altavista would show in its description, and it wouldn't give the viewer any idea of what your site actually covered. Of course, not all search engines work this way; I'd suggest you ferret around a little bit to see exactly how the popular engines work, and certainly the major two or three such as Altavista, Lycos, Yahoo, Infoseek and Excite. It therefore makes sense to ensure that your opening paragraph is carefully written to ensure it accurately reflects what your site covers.

Some search engines do still use the meta tags and titles in a variety of really important ways. For example, the title and description used for your site’s listing display on search engine results pages is often derived from a combination of the description tag, the title tag, and the first few words of the first paragraph. A well written, well defined description can compel searchers to click through and override googles algorithm which will provide content snippets when your document description is not relevant to the actual content on the site. So while many of the tags no longer influence ranking, they certainly do have an influence when it comes to drawing the visitor’s click.

Most search engines do not read the Meta Keywords Tag anymore. It is okay to ignore the Meta Keywords Tags. However, if you feel more comfortable using it, you can have about 15 important non-repetitive keywords in this Tag, separated by commas.

I dont focus too much on my Meta tags, but I added a meta description to 2 of my sites and sitting down to write an accurate Meta description wasn't the issue, i just used Google to search for my keywords and then picked some catchy phrases, edited it and used it for my meta description.
    That was it.

Yes, giving your site a proper meta tags and descriptions can give it a footer in the search engine results. For me, it is still necessary.

the use of meta tags on Google is said to be useless and does not affect the search engine rankings, unlike on Yahoo, meta tags play a big role for rankings.

Anyway, Meta description serves as a snippet on SERP so it is still good to use meta tags.

Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag. In the context of search engine optimization, when people refer to meta tags, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.
