How NOT to run a directory..

ok, I may be jaded because I have literally spent all day submitting sites to directories and this has made this post possible. I know alot of people have directories, and I apologize in advance if I am talking about you but I have to say there is a right way and a wrong way to have a directory and make money. Here are my top thing NOT to do if you want to have a successful directory... feel free to add on some of your own

1. Don't claim to be free, make me dig to my category and then try to charge me! If you were up front about it I might pay for the link but deception is never a good business practice.

2. Make sure your script works! When I spend the time to dig down and then your submission form doesn't work I get annoyed!

3. If your a directory, be proud... don't clutter up your site with a 1000 affiliate links and different material so that it is impossible to even see the main directory.

4. Just because you learned a new graphic/flash trick doesn't mean it should be on the directory website. I have seen so many blinking things, scrolling marques... totally gaudy and distracting IMHO!

Ok,I know there is like 50 more thing that drove me nuts but I will now exhale and hope you all have some suggestions for directory owners too.

I have a quite large list of really messed up directories, that claim to be free and such, have just the spammiest (new word) listings, don't change the header logo, and so many other things, like getting random idiotic domains for directories.

I hate those too.
It's even worse for those directories with titles like "free" seo directory or "free" links directory which requires a fee for inclusion.

Actually i got sick of all the knock off directories with the same old shit and I thought "What if?" ... i got 2 different types of "new twist" directories coming out. From what I see no one else has ventured into the market space with these themes. Not sure if the idea will be too out there for people but will see.

Is that you under my bed LaCabra? and there's thinking I had leprechauns! I couldn't agree more with same old same old with directories and am listening to ideas, I'm getting better by the day and can sneak into my mission control to get the programmers to earn thier corn so hopefully if the ideas start flowing we can put ideas into action.

how about

directories that are on really slow servers an takes for ever to get to the right cat
your submit form getting cleared everytime you get the answer wrong
a captcha that has military grade security applied
the submit redirects to an email
you cant find the submit

juss some of things i dont like

The number one reason on how not to run a directory?

NEVER ADVERTISING YOUR DIRECTORY!

I see tons of directories where the only advertising done is on forums or one forum.
PERIOD!

Most directory owners are too cheap, too naive, or too something to spend bucks to advertise.
I do directory reviews on my blog and the business of doing so is not good simply because directory owners do not want to pay to have a good review done, and placed permanently on my pr4 blog.
Those that do, have got some good visitors from my blog and a leakage of pr. Darn good backlinks for sure.

If you have a directory, ADVERTISE!!!
Use ezines, both ads and solos.
Safelists are a good form of advertising.
And buy links on front pages of other directories, good sites with pr.
