Smile Good Place for Aspergers Like Me

I don't know whether any of you are aware of this, but this month is the month where you will see a lot of discussions on the subject of autism. My nephew is autistic. He is 13 years old. He does not talk, is not completely potty trained, does not like loud noises, to name a few of the many things that he suffers from stemming from his autism.

There is also another form of autism that is not as noticeable as the kind of autism my nephew suffers from. It is called aspergers syndrome. I was diagnosed with Aspergers. For many years I was not aware of this until I read an article about someone who suffered from Aspergers syndrome. It was during this time a test confirmed the diagnosis. The best description of Aspergers is it is referred to as the "nerd" syndrome.

One of the symptoms of people who suffer from aspergers is their lack of social skills. Many, if not all tend to be loners.

This is why I like social networking sites. Within the confines of my own home, I find it easier to connect with people within a social networking site. I am not as easily intimidated and I find it easier to be myself. I think for anyone who is shy around people, social networking sites are a good place to develop some social skills. If you participate often enough in a few social networking sites, over time, one may start to develop some social skills and hopefully be able to transform those skills to real life.

This is currently what is happening with me. I have started making one-on-one presentations with people who are complete strangers. In the past, this would have been unheard of for me. I don't think I will ever feel comfortable around people, but I do believe I can get better at being a little more social around people. Having some social skills can only help me in my attempt to grow my business.

Just to let you know, there are some famous people who are aspergers. They include Bill Gates, Woody Allen, Bob Dylan, Bobby Fisher, Michael Jackson, and Keanu Reeves, and many more.

Lawren, you may want to look into Daily Strength, they have a community for Asperger Syndrome, Asperger Syndrome Support Group at DailyStrength: Get help with Symptoms, Signs, Treatments, News, Information, Drugs and More

You get a journal and can choose who can read it, you can join tons of communities, it was a helpful place when I was there.

Thank you Kalina for sharing this information with me. I bookmarked the website. I am also going to show this to my mom. She has a masters in social welfare and has worked with many people with certain disabilities. She has been very much involved with helping my nephew and getting him help for his autism.

My mother was also instrumental in helping me. I did not start talking till I was 9 years old. When I did start talking, she was the one who helped me with my speech impediment. To help me with my speech impediment, she told me to slow down my speech and enunciate my words. I do this now without even thinking about it. What is so funny is that now most people think I either speak properly or I have an accent. I don't say anything. Having an accent is a cool to me.

Yes sbksunil, I want to share with people what autism is. I had a very painful experience as a youth because I was so quiet and not too social. I love to play outdoors and was good at athletics so this helped me to make friends, but most times I enjoyed spending time by myself.

As an adult, many people think of me as being stuck up. I am a loner and always have been. It is hurtful. I don't agree with people judging others they don't know. By getting the word out about the different types of autism and explaining to people what autism is, it might help to some degree to prevent people from being so mean to those who are different.

When my nephew was younger, he used to get teased on the bus to and from school. People referred to him as being retarded. The kids would laugh and tease him. When he came home, he would always go directly to his room and shut the door and cry. My mother spent a lot of time working on him and trying to build his confidence. She let him know that he was very much loved and he is loved. My nephew is a very sweet boy.
