Thread: MySpace Isn't Social... Twitter is ;)

So I was a little surprised to look at this forum and see all MySpace posts...

MySpace is a great example of what the web would look like if EVERYONE was a webmaster... HORRIBLE!

Now for some real social... who's on twitter? I'm really loving this app I have it linked to my gtalk and get everyone in one chat box... which is great because the 30 or so ppl I talk to daily are all in one box... and they can talk to each other...

i keep on hearing Twitter... maybe you get to earn some amount for referring other people to it that's why so many people like you keeps on campaigning for it huh...

You don't earn anything for referring people to Twitter. It's just a craze at the moment, everyone's starting to use it.

I use Twitter, got some people following me, but the rate of visitors from the site is very, very minimal as compared to other social networks.

Not joined twitter yet, but had to comment on your comment above. That's the EXACT reason I stopped using MySpace.

@lovekissing - nope don't make a dime off of referring people to twitter -

I was working with a company that is based in California and they came up with a great little deal for the comedy clubs... you can hook twitter up to your PDA / Cell phone / etc... and text - the comedy club (garagecomedy.com) then puts the twitter feed up on a big screen next to the comedian preforming...

It's called Silent Heckler - and we debuted it at the Comedy Festival in Vegas a few months ago...

The idea is that most people won't stand up in the middle of a performance and heckle someone... but if they can do it anonymously people have no problems saying what they think... then the comedian's have to react on the spot...

Point is - there's nothing else out there like it now... and this is the Social networking section... myspace IS NOT social networking that will do ANYONE interested in making a dime any good IMHO.

Where as w/ Twitter I chat w/ Lee Odden / Jeremy Schoemaker (Shoemoney) / Barry Schwartz (Rustybrick) / doshdosh (Maki) / Andy Beal (marketing pilgrim) / Tamar / Danny Sullivan / Vanessa Fox / Rand ... the list goes on and on...

here's what I did... I set it up to work w/ Gtalk (which I always have open) so now all of the people that I call colleagues are all in one chat box w/ me and I get links to breaking stories before google can crawl it and index it for a future search... there's also tons of people starting twitter trivia contests... it's fun, it's fast, it's social...

I have a twitter account.
But I rarely go there.
About the only time is when I get an email saying someone is following me.
Why is beyond me, as I rarely post anything of any interest to anyone.

Maybe I should go there and post another inane topic.

And yes, it seems twitter is overrun with marketers posting their websites and sales.

yup same reason im not big on it either. i have one but rarely use it.

Same as Dawg & Gas, I have one but rarely use it. I figure who cares about what I'm doing 24/7. :P I may start one up again.. A similar service that Dave (dgridley) turned me on to was thumbler, pretty much the same concept but I like it more for what ever reason.

Heck there are people on twitter who do nothing but update their petty lives every minute!
Hilarious to read through (just finished flipping through a bunch of them) and see people post: Had coffee. Good coffee.
Or: Raining outside, not raining inside.
Or: Opened the window.

I mean really?
Do I or you need to keep up with someone who posts "Opened the window"?

I'd rather stay off more sites like this. Myspace is enough for me, and at that I only use it for keeping in touch with a select group of people.

Well I have to say that a lot of the 'crap' that you guys are reporting is lame... and if that's how I was using Twitter I'd be wondering what the hell it's good for as well...

Like I said earlier though - I've connected my twitter feed to my Gtalk (google's IM service)

Also if your following people who just say 'coffee = good' then unfollow them .02

Depending on whom you follow you can have instant updates all in one spot -
I mean any of you that have tried out Gtalk know what a chat box looks like - ah I just took a screen shot so you can see what I'm talking about...

so that's on the left hand side of one of my screens and is open all day... if there's something that looks interesting - take 30 seconds to go look at it... if it looks like a bunch of useless banter - simple fix is ignore it then go adjust who you are following .02

That's probably the most innovative use of Twitter that I've heard of. I signed up at twitter to figure out what it's all about... never got what i could do with it until now.

Twitter has definitely taken off like nothing else in the recent past. I started using it about a year ago personally, but didn't really see that value of it at the time. Then I started using it for work, and it's been very useful for us to interact directly with our customers.

It is most certainly a true example of a social entity.

I rarely go to twitter... But I do check what my friends are doing... I think I must be active there also. It'll be kind of waste have a account and not using it...

Well looks like my thumb is still on the pulse Twitter just rallied 80 MILLION in pre-money valuation! They've just accepted 20$Million in VC to help w/ the scalibility issues...

LIVE Twitting! short updates and links to all of the live bloggers at the sessions! Didn't have the $3k it would cost to attend? no worries live twitting made it like you were there w/o the hangover!

OH yeah and I should mention - I no longer use the Gtalk plugin for the twitter feed I'm now using Twhirl which you can download for free here twhirl | a twitter client

It's a great client that has a ton of twitter specific commands on it!
