Thread: Enough is Enough

Dosent anyone accept me think that there are too many sites out there that do the same thing? Myspace was awesome, then came was book, hmm ok still fine, but all these other new socializing sites are just dumb. They will never be as big as the original so I dont know why even try.

Everytime there is a trend and people will come up with clones of a successful site.
..and it is almost over...now we are waiting for something new...

What a load of rubbish networking social sites are what you make them, people are sick to death of myspace and facebook, too many false profiles, phishing, spamming, liars and profile stealers.

They look to the smaller sites for a niche market where they feel safer and dont have to wait minutes for a page to load.

There are lots of them and no doubt there are more to come and while some may be similar they are not all exact clones of each other and for new ones to be successful they will have to offer something slightly different than the rest.

I doubt that the point is to be as big as the original, though it would be nice.

As long as people keep flocking to them, others will keep putting up new ones.

That's how everything works, everyone wants a piece of the pie. It's not limited to this niche.

I agree with you. However, it is like any successful niche. When one succeeds, the multitude of dream chasers want to try to make the quick buck. If you see on many webmaster forums, there are always so called webmasters looking for the best niche.

It is the first couple who make it big then it is followed by those trying to catch the wave.

I believe a niche related social networking website would have a much better chance at success, than just a general social networking website.

Maybe, however, many times sites connected to one niche lose focus of that goal. I think MySpace was originally designed for the younger generation. It soon was infested with anything and anyone till it became nothing but a spam fest. It is hard to stay focused on just one niche.

Even with forums, it is hard to stay with in one niche area. If you look at most Webmaster forums for example, you will get a couple of replies an a real webmaster related topics but if you have a general chat section, some threads could get hundreds or thousands. When I ask a serious question related to a website or website help on DP, I may be lucky to get two replies. However, there is a thread about Mountain Dew and there are over 4700 replies. Nothing wrong with that but as I said, it lost its core focus on webmaster topics.

I hear you. And I do agree. Replicas are retarded. I guess the only types succeeding, of the replicas, are those specific to what certain target audiences want. For example, web designers.

Still, all that can be done via MySpace and Facebook.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!

My standing is this:

O.K. , I know that people see the success of Myspace, facebook (great sites btw) and think "WOW, I want to get rich for just making a website!" and I can see where they come from. BUT: They offer NOTHING that myspace and facebook doesn't. And myspace and facebook is already famous so why should we use your site when everyone I know has a myspace and if they dont, they know what it is.

One example I saw is "myyearbook.com" , use THIS profile as an example. It has both qualites of myspace and facebook: the different "apps" of facebook, and the 'top friends' and the same layout as myspace. GAY.

These sites may get a decent amount of traffic , but they just need to realize they are not going to make millions for COPYING a brilliant idea. You need to CREATE the brilliant idea to get rich.

Yes I see what you mean. I mean there are like hundreds of social sites you could spend days and days on...myspace, facebook, squido...so many sites you have to work with just to make one lousy site rank better in search engines. I guess you have to do what you got to do, ya?

That's pretty defeatist. I mean why try at anything for that matter? People see something that works, they try to copy it to enjoy a similar success. It's only natural that there'll be a lot of crappy copycats. But as far as never being as big as the original, no one can say. Occasionally people do succeed at taking on the giants and knocking them down. Take a look a Google.

Not everyone who has networking sites is doing it to make a fortune, a lot of us love what we are doing. I am lucky enough to have found 3 niche sites for myself, one has around 400 members who keep coming back all the time and I prefer to have that many than thousands who dont.

And if you think that you can, why not try to have the biggest and best networking site around, so many people who were at myspace are now over at facebook and who knows what the next big thing will be? People get bored so easily on networking sites as there comes a time, when its too hard to get around, so look for something newer and smaller.

Whatever you do, do it for the right reasons because you love it, not just to make money. Thats the difference in a good site and a crappy one.

I think that Semir is right if to speak about non=professional networks. But there could many a lot of professional - very helpful for starters...

I was surfing around and found a few twitter like sites that are very tightly niched.

Seem to be doing okay with numbers of members.

Why go for the masses when you can go for a portion of the masses?

Like my new site, it is niched to webmasters who need answers to their questions about being a webmaster, building their site, and so forth.

Exactly 'niched' sites.

I would say web 2.0 is about orginality that encourages more copycats, which i turn creates opportunity for the few early copycats.
