Default Search Marketing Without Social? Good Luck.

Search Marketing Without Social? Good Luck. | SmallBusinessNewz

From the article: "If you didn't already have a reason to use social media to market your business, consider Google's recent Labs release, Social Search. The feature returns search results (when possible) based on related updates from people you are connected with on various social networks, blogs, etc. Do you believe social media can help you in search?

"The way we do it is by building a social circle of your friends and contacts using the connections linked from your public Google profile, such as the people you're following on Twitter or FriendFeed..." explained Maureen Heymans upon the feature's launch. "If you use Gmail, we'll also include your chat buddies and contacts in your friends, family, and coworkers groups. And if you use Google Reader, we'll include some websites from your subscriptions as part of your social search results.""

The only thing that worries me is that google keeps knowing more and more about you. They are trying to get you to add much information as possible about you and your websites in your account so they can gather as much data as possible.

I'm not sure that Google wants people to write in their blogs and create other content just to get information about them. Google wants to serve quality pages with quality content and they rely on webmasters and bloggers to make good sites. They also want to slowly move into the social media market, which means collecting more personal information. The real problem comes from Google analytics and and other methods used to track browsing habits. They also log everyone's searches and IP addresses. They do have a privacy policy and as far as I know they don't just go around giving out people's personal information without a court order, which only happens when there is a legal investigation. I think the only concern is that some people consider it a basic human right for average citizens not to be tracked all the time.

They don't use it against people, but they might give information out because of a court order. But then they have no choice because it's the law.

I agree the web is currently centralised around the social networks, it is a good idea to build around it too
