Thread: Is it my browser or do most myspace pages just look like crap?

A thing occurred to me recently... Maybe myspace pages look terrible because of my web browser? I mean I do use a Mac (well several of them) and FireFox, Safari, and my personal favorite at home on my mini - I use Camino..

In every case every myspace page I have seen looks like a 2 year old put it together.. Wait, that is being too nice. When my son was 2 he could draw better crayon drawings than some of these myspace pages..

Haven't we learned anything from the early 90's Mosaic era early html.. I thought the days of that damn blink tag were over... Argh..

Maybe that is the point, I mean, maybe these sites are supposed to look like someone threw up a spaghetti dinner. Egads... Yellow text on purple backgrounds, endless pages of horrible images and red on black text comments from other idiots with an even larger desire to make a mockery of form follows function.

What gives.. Someone explain this to me..

MySpace looks like crap because the users have no idea how to build a webpage. It's not about usability it's about "personal expression". The personal expression is, Yeah I'm an idiot, I didn't know you cannot read black text on a black background. :twisted:

I also blame all those profile generators, and graphic sites, most of the add advertisement images that link to their site in the CSS the provide you. You average user doesn't know how to remove them, heck some times I have a hard time finding where it is in the code.

If it weren't for a few friends and the old friends I keep meeting I wouldn't even have a MySpace account. I do try and educate people, I've cleaned up my friends' CSS more than once but the next day they go "pimp" their profile again.

Maybe C should do myspace profiles -- hint hint.

I would think web pages would look better on a mac? They do for me.

But there is another reason MySpace pages might look crappy: It's intentional.

Yep, long ago I saw a news story about MySpace and it was explained that why MySpace pages displayed so crappy was because the original creators of MySpace caught on fast that young people avoided web sites that were too "perfect". It was said this was because anything too "clean" was usually deemed by young people as a product of the corporate world, mass marketing and / or "The Man". The worse a web page looked, the more confidant kids were it was created by one of their "own" and so more worthy of their attention.


At least, that's what I heard. It makes sense because MySpace pages have always looked rather crappy...even before all these myspace template sites poped up, you know?

Pretty ironic considering how much MySpace is overloaded with advertising now, huh?

All I use is Mac, and the pages still look crappy.. They look like they were created on a PC...

I think saying they look like crap is a kindness.. they are beyond crap in the main, way beyond. My biggest gripe tho isn't the appearance so much as the incessant music blaring..

I think you can disable music playing automatically via your settings. In fact you can: Account Settings > Music Settings. I just won't work for outside embeds.

I think 1/2 the pages look like the poo b/c everyone tries to cram 117,818 different things onto the page.

I on the other hand kept it below 36K things so...

Well i'm not sure, but i think i managed to make my myspace profile somewhat simple and a little better looking than most. Check it out here to see my point, basicly impossible to make all the boxes the same width though not sure why. Might just be me that where not that experienced with it at the time being. The thingy that advertises a site in the top left corner is a customers website and i promised to use it on my myspace to help him a bit

Hahahahaha, nooo it's not your web browser. They generally look really awful and disjointed.

Something tells me all one need do is use less pink backgrounds with yellow text to make their MySpace page look half way decent...
