How much disk space and bandwidth do yuo think you will need?
    And what is your budget?
Are you looking for cheapest deals or for quality hosts? If you are just looking for cheap ones, I would suggest you to look at free hosting.

For paid hosts, it is true that you will get cheap deals if you make an yearly payment, but I would prefer a monthly payment as this will avoid headaches if you run into problems with your host.

Also, registering a domain by yourself will be safe, or you will probably lose that domain name if you run into problems with the host.

Noobeedoo is enlightened.. These points never crossed my "Noobius" mind. I'm thinking of paying my prospect webhost a year's worth of service fee.. You got me thinking there.

    Thanks buddy!

    You are welcome.

I have seen many threads with people moaning about the refunds when they start having issues with their host. And in most cases they will be out of their "money back guarantee" period and host and things will be at their hosts's will.

So personally, I would always go for a monthly payment mode atleast until I am comfortable with the host.

Nah, I have several quality hosts I want to show them.

However, they're both thinking about buying packages with like, 100g space, for like 200$ a year.
Which, is retarded, since this is their very first websites, with no purpose.
    As, it's for school.

I'll probably stick them with bluehost.. all my other beginners have fun their
    Any other newbie suggestions?

If they have the means to buy from bluehost, nothing wrong with that.. its not "retarded" .. what's retarded is if you buy from bluehost and you have no means (money) .. they are your "friends", you should help them, not calling their limited know-how as "retarded".. show them the "quality hosts" that you know of.. with good explanation from you, they would have better options to think about..

    I've been helping them.
    But it's hard trying to explain to them that they're not going to be using 100gigs. D;

They just don't get the concept.

    thanks for the help.

Thats right and all newbies are like this. They get fascinated by the hosts who offers specs in GB's or even TBs and will fall into their web.
The basic rule that everyone has to remember is that you will get for what you pay. If you are getting more than a dedicated server for a few $$, you are compromising on some other part, and in most cases it will be quality or reliability.

    I was looking at hostgator..
I think I'll just convince them to get bluehost.
Or perhaps shove them in with 1and1 with me... (I know, terrible company, relax).

    Thanks for the offer Gasmoney.

Yeah thats right. If you are looking for an overselling business model, I think they are the best.

There are mixed reviews about them, but good ones outnumbers the other.

You are free to select any host and recommend them to your friends. However, as said earlier by other board members, avoid hosts who are overselling.
You will get better support and price model from small hosts who are true in offering services.

My biggest beef with HostGator was the file permissions issue. Nothing could be 0777 which is PITA for someone moving several sites from another host. My second beef is SSH wasn't enabled by default even though it came with the plan, I had to email a copy of my license for SSH, when it finally got turned on it was severely limited.

Over all for someone just starting out, I think HG is pretty decent. I wouldn't recommend someone move to them though, if only for the permissions BS.

Permissions are for security issues. So many running so many cookie cutter, third party scripts, etc they have to do something to lock down the servers

    BS.
Many hosts are doing this now. I think it will be a good practice as shell access give one more power and it is good to make sure that it is not in wrong hands.

Yahoo hosting has the fastest setup but tends to be expensive. Bluehost, hostgator are others.

Hmm...if you are looking into doing some proxies on your server, then try wdserver.net. They deals with any complaints regarding your service. the specs are good for normal website too.. definitely not overseller. I use fdcservers dedi :P

Overselling, low cost, unlimited bandwidth/diskspace offers, etc... are to be avoided while choosing host.
Go for host who have good reputation and are in business since long time, don't go for high banner adverts hosts rather try to get a host have excellent feedback time for your pre-sales queries.

I have heard a mixture of comments about their hosting services, you stated above. If you are looking for a good web hosting you should search their level of support, especially in the case of shared hosting.

Almost all the web hosts are saying that they have 99.9% up time ,it may or may not be possible. Although most of the time they wouldn't have good up time. Now these type of hosts are in the group of cheap hosting .Because it is depends upon their technical support.Somebody seeks cheap web host, but most of their relationship will not grow long too.
