    Default some advice please

I am thinking of starting a website that would consist of me offering free forum hosting on a subdomain like forumer.com, except that I would give the admin full access and ability to add their ads as well.

Cost is no object because I plan to use my online earning to finance it as well as look for some sponsors. Right now I just want to figure out how much i would need for great hosting.

Would a VPS/Dedicated server be ideal for this?

    If you're doing a free/reseller deal, I'd suggest getting a Dedicated.

Though, I have no personal experience in this subject. :P

Yes, if you're providing hosting, having your own server is the way to go, but you should get one with support I guess, since you may not know/have all the answers for problems which will come up with your hosting clients, so whichever server comes with support.

I'm not doing reseller. I said right in my post its going to be a free service so I suppose dedicated would be better. But like you said you have no exp, but I do think your deadon. Im gonna wait and see what other people say

I think that you can start with a VPS as this is only going to start. You will be adding customers slowly, so I won't think there is a need for a dedicated server at this point.
But as you grow, you will need a dedicated server at some point which is not that far as these softwares are really cu intensive.

Also, if you are not much into the administration side, I guess it will be better to go for a managed VPS.

I already got my hosting. I took the advice of the person who owns the site that is basically the same but with blogs. I'm using a reseller plan, and then ill be bumping up to dedication after I start making some money through my other ventures

Hopefully it will work for you, have a backup plan though just in case your current host cuts you off. It's very possible if any of the forums are at all active that you will use more cpu/ram that they will allow.

you should get a dedicated or at least a vps, because such services are cpu-heavy

And if you are advertising, you will get a ton of signups especially from China. New free hosts spread like wildfire over there. Be very prepared for a mass signup spree

I agree free hosting has lots of potential problems that hosts owners of the servers must be aware of.
