Cpanel transfer if you're on cpanel
is that possible to do myself?
if i am a shared server?
Depends on the hosting companies settings. Some companies will also help you transfer in order to get your business.
ok one last thing
i was able to download a backup to desktop
what are my chances of using the backup option on new host with it being 1.4GB thats browser so was not sure if it would just time out
your best bet is to ask your host to do a whm to whm transfer the thing is mosts hosts dont do this as they would require ssh to the other companies server, and i no i would give a competitor my server ssh.
the best way to do it would do a full home directory back up in cpanel leve it on the server, then get your host to wget the tar ball to the new server where the new host will be able to restore the files and structure and account settings on the new server
i wouldnt download the file as ists over a gb you'll end up having session timeouts be disconnected from the server and end up with a corrupt archive
my 2cent
You can download a backup to desktop and upload it from there an soon as your site is hosted on the new server.

If you have a backup on your desktop, just upload that backup, and then unzip within the cpanel itself.
Or do it the long way, and unzip it on your desktop and upload the files one at a time or whatever amounts the ftp program will do.
Just make a full backup FTPing the backup to your new host. Contact your new host and ask them to restore it. It should take you about 15 minutes.
