most of shared hosts will ban you way too soon ....... Satrt with a Vps and change to dedicated whenever necessary!!!
Best of luck!!
Dunno, but hostgator.com allows audio and video streaming on shared and reselling, does it mean a site like this could exist on a shared account? or is it all due to CPU and RAM usage that may not be enough? You know, you may not have too many visitors, it always takes time to promote a site, so if HostV.com offer a shared package, try it first and upgrade later.

quite a few hosts provide ffmpeg nowadays. if you're okay with erratic behaviour from your host, go with resellerzoom/hostingzoom. it's inexpensive, but reliability varies.

some hosting sites will allow your site and help you with the ffmpeg issue.
but you need to pick a package that pretty high up there on the shared level.
maybe 15 - 20 bucks a month.
I'd get a dedicated from FDC Servers.
Unlimited bandwidth for the win! Plus they're pretty dang fast, and since it's a dedi you can install whatever you want.

@ maharoba: problems with support is just ONE of the erratic things. at times, i've gotten detailed responses within 20 minutes. at other times, 2 days to get a copy-paste "everything looks fine"
I've just shifted from resellerzoom to nearlyfreespeech.net, and realize that this was long overdue.
in fact, i take back even that weak recommendation of mine. don't go with resellerzoom.
Try us at Eternity Hosting.
We do have all required extensions installed and therefore ClamAv is installed which will let you know if any of the videos hosted contain viruses.

Until a couple of months ago, I was a big fan of theirs... the negative reviews have just started coming in, and they're outnumbering the positive ones. Their support forum (RZ customers only) is full of complaints.
Earlier, there were sevral instances of "this rocks!" and "that rocks!" on the forum. Not anymore.
Streaming media eats bandwidth and resources (cpu mem). In order for it to work effectively, you will need a dedicated server.
That's a pretty good idea, good luck with it![]()
