Not sure.
I used to use a cpanel.
Then I chose windows.
No clue what the difference is
OH boy, aren't I helpful?
Different operating system of course
I prefer linux, I believe however certain apps need Windows to run. Reason why the few who go with windows go with it from my limited knowledge on the subject.

thanks ya'll. .asp and cold fusion are two of the programs that are windows only. guess I'll be using linux.

Different operating systems (as Grim has said) will run different software.
Windows will natively run Exchange for e-mail, SQL, ASP.
Linux will run SUSE for e-mail.
It depends on what you need the server for.

I need the server to host my [strike]porn[/strike] new site about tv shows and tacos

If you don't have any special requirements (and it seems as though you don't), then Linux would probably be the best choice.
Most others are using it and help will be easier to come by.

The biggest adavantage I find is that there are loads of open source scripts for php (linux), and not as many for asp (windows).
As stated earlier, the only real advantage to linux is the cost of the licensing
There are very few things that can run on linux that will not run on Windows, but that is a one way street. The typical Linux host is running a LAMP (Linux Apache MySql Php), and the only portion of that which will not run on Windows is Linux itself.

u can run .asp on linux, just requires a ton of modifications to the operating system and apache.

You will also find many more tutorials learning to administer a Linux server than a windows one.
That's true there are a lot of open source stuff for a Linux server, but I heard that advanced MYSQL features are to be paid for soon.
I prefer Linux because it supports Fantastico, and makes website publishing such an easy job . Linux CP Cpanel has lot features that windows control panel do not have.
if you run php scripts alot i would not recommend windows hosting as about 98% of scripts run only on Linux servers
The majority of servers on the web run on linux. Their is a reason for this. Windows servers are problematic, their is not an efficient Web GUI out their that would be worth using. (Plesk is survivable, but looks bleak in comparison to Cpanel)
Windows
- ASP.NET
- MSSQL
- Expression WEb users
- Sharepoint
Linux -
Everything else.
linux is cheaper to setup for a host than windows and offers more flexibility IMO. .asp is a dying language due to the lack of windows support and the gain in popularity of php and all the free php scripts out there.

What I like in Linux is the .htaccess that allows you to create SEO-friendly urls for your blog or forums. Essential for SEO![]()

that's apache!![]()
