    Default Hosting Requirements For Sites

Could you guys tell me what are the main bandwidth and disks space requirements for running a web search engine site.

I will be opening a web search engine site and I'm not sure what kind of hosting I should get and how much space I should get.

Do you guys think 24 gb disk space and 240 gb bandwidth monthly will be fine for running a web search engine ?

    Hi Nowak:

The fact that you are asking this question, tells me you might not be completely aware of what you could get into,

Are you using a ready-made script to run it, or are you coding your own search algorithms and spiders? (well, if you was doing the later, you would probably wouldnt be asking the question that you asked)

Anyway, no matter how you do it, you are looking at a shit load of space and bandwidth, I would not start a search engine with anything less than a dedicated server, but that is just me!~

It's not really the disk space and bandwidth you really need to be thinking of. You need to be looking at other server specs such as cpu and memory.

Your probably best of starting on a VPS or something rather than getting a dedicated server.

The site would be a total flop and you'll just end up throwing money away.

    Start small grow big.

The web search engine is from a script, but I have fully modified it.

I decided to get the 24 gb disk space and 240 gb bandwidth hosting for now.

Thanks for the responses. I think later on I will be getting dedicated servers.

You should listen to kingpin and go with a vps before jumping in with a dedicated. If anything just to keep the cost down if it does fail.

I have bought a shared hosting with 24 gb disk space and 240 gb bandwidth.

But soon I will probably be getting some dedicated servers or vps servers.

If your running a "search engine" script it would make sense to have your own IP address. It would only take one of them websites that is on your shared account to get blacklisted and it could make your life difficult.

It all depends of the traffic. Some host it on a shared hosting plan for less than $5 a month, while other use multiple datacenters located around the globe (Google anyone?)

I'm thinking about getting a dedicated ip, so it would be a little bit safer.

But for now on I will be staying with the hosting resources I have purchased.

Hosting is not a compromise when it comes to money SEO4China so I disagree there.

Hosting is a core element to being successful online which is often overlooked.

I didn't not recommend a cheap plan, I only said that it all depended of the traffic. If his site is just going to get 100+ visitors a day for instance I don't see why he would need a VPS or a dedi. Same as dropping an A-bomb to kill a snake...

    Well, not really..

A VPS would be more suited to this project for many reasons.

A dedicated server is the next step if the site is successful and out grows the VPS. With shared hosting, as my reasons above, it is quite easily to reach your BW limit in a short space of time.

Not to mention uptime issues, server load etc etc.

A VPS is protecting your ass from other sites that may/could be either black listed which could get the server IP address black listed which for Nowak would be a bad thing if he intends on having the email system in place.

Or another site that is listed on that server IP could be practicing unethical technologies.

A VPS is not as expensive as a dedicated server but you reap the benefits from having one. Once the site goes big time then you can simply move to a dedicated server.

All hosting plans has their pros and cons. You have to take into account so many possibilities of the other sites that are on that shared IP.

If this was my project I would opt for a VPS to start with. From what Nowack has suggested he is going with the site, it will use a fair amount of disk space and BW.

It would be a shame to go to all that trouble of building something like that then another site messes things up.

I have paid around $150 for that shared hosting plan with 24 gb disk space and 240 bandwidth.

I never had problems with their services, and since I purchased that new shared plan they changed me to a new server and the site will probably be working even faster that is right now.

But then the next step will probably be getting a dedicated servers to host all of the site contents.
