Thread: HostGator Experience

I'm thinking about changing my hosting service to HostGator, because I'm currently paying lots of money for the hosting service and I only have a specific amount of disk space and bandwidth.

I have been looking around the HostGator site and I have noticed that the Shared Hosting plan is pretty good deal, because it offers unlimited bandwidth.

So I just want to know what is your experience with HostGator before I will be changing to HostGator hosting service.

Please let me know what is your experience with HostGator, how's the speed, uptime, and the support.

I am hosted there and the support is pretty good. The uptime is excellent and the speed is pretty good

I have tested some sites that are hosted by HostGator and I think the speed of the site is really slow comparing to the hosting service where my site sis hosted at.

There is a huge difference between the site speed, because on the hosting I'm right now it doesn't load the site, it opens the site right away.

And on the site I checked that are hosted by HostGator the sites are loading pretty slow for me, so not exactly sure about them.

I think $150 a year on HostGator is really cheap for the swamp shared hosting plan, and you get unlimited features.

So I'm really undecided about this hosting service. I'm still waiting for some more experiences from you.

with speed its usually the size of the actual website

Take a look at my current hosting service I'm using and compare my site with a site hosted on HostGator.

I personally think there is a huge difference between my current hosting service and HostGator.

its your choice. Try seeing if there are any other search engines hosted on hostgator because blogs and other sites would take more time then a se to load

The sites doesn't have much content, but inside the servers the site has many resources.

By saying that I mean that all of the uploaded images are hosted on the server and it doesn't effect the site speed yet.

I'm not sure if that was what you mean exactly.

I am pretty sure file/image hosting sites will be against HG's TOS.

It is a great deal however make sure you have no proxies, file host, image host, etc....i know from experience they dont allow these

Almost all the hosting services allow image hosting sites to be hosted on their servers.

I'm surly positive that HostGator accepts image hosting sites.

Talking right now with them and asking them if they allow image hosting sites.

I think you're right. I grabbed this from their TOS.

Examples of unacceptable material on all Shared and Reseller servers include:

Yeah, I just finished talking with them and they told me I can't run an image hosting site on shared or reseller hosting.

But I can run it on dedicated servers, but they have a really expensive dedicated servers.

Exactly what we told you lol...

You might want to use the quote feature sometimes, have no idea who the second line is directed at...

Multi-quote is great for this purpose.

You obviously don't read 'Almost all the hosting services' ' TOS. I think you will find that on shared hosting accounts a lot of companies restrict the kind of sites you can host. Basically anything that will use high resources.

Here is the response I have received from HostGator.

Those types of sites are allowed, however it requires a dedicated server. Especially if you plan on generating a lot of traffic. Because if you tried to run that on a shared environment, it would cause extremely high server load and that affects everyone else on server.

Looks like HostGator is not for me anymore, because they do not allow image hosting sites on shared or reseller hosting.

And mainly they have a really expensive dedicated servers that cost over $150 a month and up.

I don't have any clue what I should due in this case of the hosting services for many reasons.

Because when the site will get popular then it will be hard to move all the files to another host.

So now I'm thinking about getting a dedicated server for a pretty fair price.

Do you guys knwo any fair price dedicated servers, if so please post it.

Not really, most hosts will even do this for you. Just get a low end VPS for now and then when it comes to moving files across to better server you will have root access to both.

You could check out the offers in the hosting forum in the marketplace here, there's some good deals going around, and sometimes even coupons for WTF members.

Vps's are in the middle of dedis and shared.....and hostgator allows image hosters on vps's

I have been calling right now from one hosting company to another hosting company and so far only one hosting company allows image sites to be hosted on their shared plans, it's GoDaddy.

They don't have really expensive plans and dedicated servers are really cheap comparing to other hosting companies offering dedicated servers.

So if you have ever used or you are currently using GoDaddy, what is your experience with them, how fast is the site loading.

I used godaddy before hostgator...for some reason my extra domains work but that probably was just my problem..... my friend used it for a long time before switching to host gator (lol) and he had no problems with godaddy, he just switched because hostgator offers more

Thanks, I'm currently looking at the shared hosting plans of GoDaddy and I think those plans are too small for running an image hosting site.

Dont you get like 100 gig space and a good amount of bandwidth?

I think I will be getting a shared hosting plan with 300 gigabytes pf disk space and 3,000 gigabytes of bandwidth.

You shouldnt need more than 3k gig bw/mo, but i think hostgator offers 6k gig bw/mo but then again, you obviously cant use hostgator, so yup, best bet = godaddy

I bet even godaddy would shut you down if you used 3000GB. A 100mbps line at full capacity can push out 30TBish a month max. Why not go over to WHT? You will find a lot more reviews and offers.

They cant shut you down if you used exactly 3000 gb because thats what they are advertise you can get...however if you go to 3001 gb then they could shut you down

However, if he even reaches 3k gb bw...i will be very surprised......

When I would get that GoDaddy plan that contains 3,00 gigabytes of bandwidth I could be getting 100 gigabytes bandwidth a day, so it would be 100 gigabytes times 30 days eguals to 3,000 gigabytes a month.

I think that would last for couple of months.

That will definatly be good for now because you only are using 4-5 gig a day....you have a LONG way to go before you are using 100 gig/day.......but once/if you do, then youll probably have to go dedi

If you manage to use 3000GB of bandwidth in a month I would say it is very likely you would have been above their strict cpu usage limit numurous times.

Yeah but my guess even if you hit 2k, youd be already looking into dedi's

I don't think any kind of file hosting should be ran of shared hosting to begin with. Although these companies manage it well, they are still overselling to the extreme.

That is not what I mean. I am saying if you intend to provide a good service, you shouldn't be looking for the best deal around. You should be looking for a semi decent VPS if you intend to host images. What happens around peak times when your server is getting hundreds upon hundreds of request?

General terms can cause an item to not be allowed even if it is not specifically stated..

The prices are extremely high for dedicated servers.

The Planet company offered me a dedicated hosting for running an image hosting site for over $1,000 a month.

So that would be around $12,000 for that dedicated server from that hosting company called The Planet.

The main problem is that I don't make any profit from the Network of Snoork, because I have taken all the advertisement off the site.

So now I'm stuck in the middle of mod and don't know what I should do.

I was talking on the phone with GoDaddy and they told me that they can increase my bandwidth on shared hosting plan for $1.99 for 1 gigabyte of extra bandwidth.
