    Default Web Server

I have calculated all the fees that I would spent monthly on the hosting service from a company and the fees I would spent running my own server from home.

I'm currently thinking about buying a network server to run the Snoork Network sites, but I can't decide what I should really do.

I have an empty room with a good air conditioning source, a high speed local internet connection, and a custom made computer with a good technology.

So, I would be able to easily run my own web server from home, but first I would like to hear from you guys what you think about this.

I wouldn't do it, unless I had a Fat Pipe (T-1 or Higher) coming out of my house, yes you might have high speed internet, but if it is coming from the local cable or phone company, chances are it is asynchronous (meaning the download is way faster than the upload)

If this is the case, you must remember that your upload speed, becomes the "user's" download speed, which due to it's speed might not hold up under the load of multiple users at the same time!

The room is alway in average temperature, it's empty and the air condition is working, so the temperate in there is colder than anywhere in the house.

I have done some speed tests of my internet connection and my upload speed is pretty low. my download speed is 4,986 kbps and my upload speed is 370 kbps.

Those tests have been done from my computer that is using wireless connection, with cable connection the download speed and upload speed would be probably higher.

But, I'm really up to getting my own servers and running a huge network of Snoork that will offer the best benefits for the community.

I will be probably offering free hosting as well after I will get the server.

I'm gonna do some tests later on, with the internet cable connection pluged in to the computer.

I'm expecting the uplaod speed to be about 1,200 kbps with the local internet connection.

...and the fact that you're using wireless has nothing to do with your external ISP line speed.
The wireless bandwidth is a much bigger pipe than the ISP line, so it is not the bottleneck.

Bad idea to run your server from home, the speed for web suffers worldwide would not be fast enough. You would have to test loading speeds from various geographic locations, remember the Internet is worldwide not just users from your hometown. Also datacenters have generators and other measures setup in the event of power outages, etc... I assume your home will not be as prepared as a datacenter in case of a disaster.

Keeping in mind that there are thousands of home computers that serve the web.
Back in the days of the internet being new, quite a few people put their old computers up as servers.

Somewhere I read about these old computers still out there serving up whatever to surfers.

But yes, it is the speed and connections that will kill your home server.
Unless as noted, you get a dedicated line just for the server.

Thank you guys for all the information and reviews.

I have decided to do some testings before buying the real server.

So I have setup a server on my hard drive and it's running from my computer.

Could you guys please let me know what is the speed of the site, the site address is http://65.184.16.112/

The site is hosted on my own hard drive running directly from my computer, on a real server teh site will be probably running faster.

I never had any downtime with my internet provider so far, so I can guarantee 99.9% uptime to people who will be visiting the site.

I'm not sure where you getting that information, but I will be running the server directly from my computer via local internet connection.

The connection will be faster, because it all will be connected via internet cable.

I am sorry but do you guys seriously believe he can run a image host off his home connection? Dawg you are right in saying that people used to run a lot of sites from home. I bet these sites weren't hosting GBs worth of images though.

Well content is a factor too. So he has an upload speed of 30KB/s and I am sure he said in another post he is going through around 7GB a day. At a rough estimate I would say his connection could pump out 2.5GB a day.

    There is a problem there

I am not saying that you are wrong, and I have seen websites hosted on peoples computers, I am just saying I don't think it is at all plausible in this situation.

***Edit - Oopsie I meant around 46KB/s so my working out will be a little wrong.

I personally think I will be able to run my own server from home.

I got all the necessary resources, except a server where I will be getting soon.

About the power outage, I will probably get a backup generators along with the server.

So, I don't have to mainly worry about the power outage and if the internet would be down.

I currently use more than 7 gigabytes of bandwidth a day on my image hosting site, and each day it's growing.

You will not be able to do what you are hoping to do, but no matter what people who know what they are talking about, the multiple reasons why you will NOT be able to do this, you appear to be dead set on doing it and neglecting any and all actual support being offered to you.

You do not have anywhere near enough bandwidth for a single popular site, much less being able to 'offer free hosting', nor will most ISP's allow it.. That is even if you used the line dedicated only for your hosting.

The beginnings of the net, hosting from home is far different than what is being suggested here.

Lastly a faster computer will not make that tiny little page you have set up load any quicker, currently with basically no traffic going to it, nothing in reality loading but some text, the only thing slowing it down is your net connection.

fedup added 16 Minutes and 1 Seconds later...

One of my servers averages just over a gig a day, far, far less than you're currently pulling.

Even still I get peaks of 3769.4 kb/s which is much higher than your maximum upload speed.

You do see how your connection is not going to be able to do this now do you not? You'll have constant times of the server being unable to be reached, even with the optimal upload speeds, even with you not using your computer, even if you do not grow your network, give free hosting, even if your ISP allows it. There simply is not enough pipe, your server will be slower than molasses in the south pole.

A t1 actually has less bandwidth on the download compared to most dsl/cable connections. It is on par with what he expected to get, slightly more.

It is a more dedicated reliable connection that allows more to be done with it than a dsl/cable line, bandwidth however it does not have, which is what he needs.

Most servers on the web have at least a 10mb port.

He wants to give hosting away which equates to HUGE bandwidth.

BTW the amounts I listed before on peak is MORE than a t1 can handle, yet my server uses less daily than he uses now.

Could you guys please explain to me how does T1 connection exactly works.

Does it consist of phone line connection through the internet or a normal connection.

Because, I'm currently on the phone with my internet provider and they told me T1 is a telephone line.

And now I'm waiting for my internet provider to confirm the amount of monthly data transfer I can use monthly.

I know things might have changed over the last few years, but a T1 used to be something the phone company or whoever had to come put in your house (or Business), Unless this has changed too, a T1 should be 1.5M up and down, no throttle, straight 1.5 going both ways. You will provably want to invest on a switch also, but I dont know enough about this things to advice you further.

Finally, couple of minutes ago I have finished talking with my internet provider service. I was asking them about running my own server and they said that there is absolutely no problem running my own server. I have also asked them about the data transfer limit and there is no limitations on the data transfer.

Regarding the upload speed there is a way to upgrade the upload speed by getting an extra resources for my internet connection and I will be probably upgrading the upload speed for a better performance. I have calculated the costs I would spent yearly on dedicated servers from the company and the costs I would spent by running my own data center.

The costs for an average dedicated server from a company would costs me around $2,400 every year. The one time cost for my own data center would be around $1,200 including the internet upgrade. There is a huge difference between the servers company offers and my own data center. Probably somewhere around this month you should be seeing the Network of Snoork hosted on my own data center.

Best of luck to you, don't say I didn't warn you..

BTW customer service reps at an ISP don't know much about servers, keep that in mind

Monthly bandwidth also does not equate being able to keep up with the bandwidth required at peak times for a server.

Yeah, we all gonna see how this new data center will work and how it will be performing.

I will always have separate hosting from a hosting company in case of some critical power outage.

I personally think this will work pretty good, because the server I will be getting is pretty good from the customer reviews.

You're still not getting it, it does not matter how good a server is if your net connection is not powerful enough.

A decent p4 could more than likely over flood that net connection w/o even trying. I wish you the best, but I honestly believe you truly have no idea when it comes to bandwidth.

What good is a bad ass server if it's needing to send out 5.0mbs or more of data but can only send out 1.0mbs?

The server will be not be the bottleneck, it will be your net connection.

As I have mentioned in my previous posts I will be probably upgrading my internet connection for a better performance.

This should really help run the server more smoothly when I will have more advanced internet connection speed.

By the way I can't decide from what company I should get the server from.

Which of the fallowing would you recommend ?

    - Western Digital

    - Netgear

    - Buffalo

    - Linksys

    - Dlink
