Default Choppy FTP connection to shared server environment

I got a $7 per month plan on a server and I have a problems with FTP connection. I am trying to upload a 20MB file with multiple folders and files in it and the connection is very choppy and I literally was not able to do that since yesterday.
Does anybody knows how this work? Do they just impose some kind of limit on the connection and there is no way to get around that? This is a major obstacle and can get frustrating etc...
    Thank you.

It seems that you have been restricted from uploading such a huge file. Usually on a shared server all webhost do set an File size upload limit for the obvious reason of security and server performance. If you are on a shared server you will have to get it confirmed from your webhost or if you are on higher hosting package like a VPS where you have server access then you need to set maximum file size upload in your php.ini configuration file.

I split the folder into smaller ones (it is multiple folders with folders inside it). It went to the point where I had to go to the sub-folder level and upload files almost one by one not to lose track where I was - obviously something was wrong with this. I dont see how having around 5 Wordpreess installations would a problem. Why else would I get hosting in the first place? I cant be struggling to upload 10MB to a server for 12-24 hours, right?
I was talking to a different company and they told me that they have accounts with 20-30 Wordpress installations on a $7 per month plan, and there is no issues with FTP uloads like this etc (at least thats what they said). But one way or another I think somethings wrong with this. I talked to them and they were suppose to change it.

Choppy FTP connections are usually the FTP client or the server itself. Have you tried several different FTP clients? Filezilla? SmartFTP? Just the browser? If the FTP isn't the issue, consider finding a different host or upgrading so you can get better and more stable FTP connections.
