Thread: website still down

Hi,

What would you do? My site has been down for over two weeks now

Host has my backups of the site. When I ask what is going on all I get from them is we as working on the problem.

They were paid for a full year.

What would do?

If it were me I would demand the backups and if I was fortunate enough to get them I would get new hosting and change the name servers.

In the future always keep backups and update your backups whenever you make changes. Since you do not have your own backups you are basically at your hosts mercy.

Out of interest, what host was it?

I'd expect any decent host to refund you a portion of the money you paid due to this (or give you an extra month or two hosting for free). 2 weeks downtime is way too much.

I'd probably be moving host like Kentuckyslone said.

I might have worded it wrong. I have my own backups of the site and sent them a copy of the backups.

Just waiting for them to put the site back online from my back ups.

I do not know how to do this.

My big problem was it took for ever to find a host for this site to begin with.
Most people don't have the right access to the server to set up the site.

Yeah see, I would switch providers.. but as you've said, you had a hard time finding someone with the right configuration to begin with.. unless you can find a better provider that meets the configuration, you are at your hosts mercy, but, they should compensate you some how for the downtime for sure.

The host has been really good in the past for me fixed every problem that I have had. They did something to their server and that is where the problem started.

I suspect that you are running a pretty rare script on your site. When your host updated the software for their server, you site stopped running because it was incompatible. This may be fixed by your host undoing what they did to their server but they could be very reluctant to do this. What this means is that you may get the same problem with other hosts as well.

I would check with the original vendor of your script whether they have got any updated versions that may work. You will have to ask what exactly did your host do to their server. Failing that, it is possible that you may need a dedicated server so that you can select what software comes with the server.

The script is wordpress MU. It has something to do with getting members to show up

membername.domainname.com

I'm not sure on the setup but I know that you need root access on a server more then a standard resellers account.

What I really think is the problem is that the person who set it up the first time is no longer with the company and the people now have no Idea how to do it is my guess but that is just a guess.

I remember Sami going thru a bunch of crap just to find someone that would do it. In my opinion, the only reliable way to run Word Press µ is to have a dedicated box, and this was a bit more expensive that what she could spend.

WOW Thank you for the offer But I do Not know how to set up this site Can you do it?
I have the backups.

Also it took me about a mo. the last time to find the host that I have now. At that time I was online full time. Now I am online only when I am at a friends house. Money is short untill I find a new job.

Also I was told never to look a gift horse in the mouth, But I must ask why you would offer all this work for FREE.

Sami you can have a vps for 10euro which almost same as a dedicated box.
I am using them last 15-20 days. very reliable till now.

However its unmanaged and u'll have to do everything urself.

Hi,

Dummy here what is a VPS? I have know idea how to do an install so an unmanaged server won't help me. Plus I know it will need root access to install.

It is a php script.

But it is really hard set up I have been told and you need root access on a server as part of the install.

Thats bullsh!t!

2 weeks of downtime makes the host very unreliable,. I cant believe you havent even moved to another host after 1 week. In case u paid yearly, y dont u fill a paypal dispute against them?
