Default GeoCities has shut down for good.

R.I.P. GeoCities: A Community is Killed | WebProNews

GeoCities is no more. Yahoo! shut it down. I remember using GeoCities in the 90's as a free host when I first started making web sites. Yahoo! has a paid hosting service which they are advertising to make up for the fact that GeoCities used to receive 10 million unique hits per month.

From the article: "MySpace isn't exactly at the peak of its popularity, but there are still tons of people who use it. What if they just pulled everything? What if Google bought Facebook and decided to kill it? What if your Tweets vanished? Sure these things seem unlikely now because these services are still fresh. Well, GeoCities was once the "it" thing too. Granted, most GeoCities sites I have seen are not much to look at now, but that doesn't mean people aren't getting use out of them. They're obviously getting page views."

It's about time it got shut down. The amount of crap that was on those sites was unbelievable. It was like the anti-christ to developers when I started learning properly.

I guess it won't be missed much. Come to think of it, I don't miss it at all.

I mostly tell people to use cheap hosting instead of free. cheap are decent services with full
ownership. now a days allot of freehosting offers in market. if you can launch website in $2-5 with decent services than why go for free. best way is to go to shopaserver and buy a suitable package for your self

Oh boy, GeoCities had its darkside of people using the free service to phish Yahoo accounts. That was way back in the day though.

I remember trying them out ~9 years ago, lol. Haven't seen much of them recently, hence I was half-expecting this.
