Do you use SSL? Is it useful for anything else than e-commerce?

SSL hosting is useful for anytime you want to present a secure connection to your visitors and need there trust; such as forms and any other transaction that collects personal information or log-in details.

You can also use ssl for your ftp server. It is just an security thing if you don't have any important data pass over the web it is fine without it

That being said, if you are passing important information and its not being passed via SSL, you are losing a LOT of business.

it is important to use SSL to protect your personal information and your client information when surfing the net. Without SSL any information you entered in one's website such as your personal information, your credit card details are vulnerable and could be captured easily by a hacker. With the SSL you are confident that your information are safe because even the hacker can intercept it still they can't read it.

SSL is good for use on login pages and pages where other private data is entered.
Although SSL is recommended for login pages so no one can steal your users' passwords, if you have just a simple blog, there's no need to secure your login page as no one will probably be interested in stealing your visitors' passwords.

In absence of SSL, all the information travels through Internet would be visible, in that case your personal or confidential data are not secure. The primary work of SSL is to start the browser security lock which is the safe for you and your customers. Even there are two terms in SSL, Shared SSL and Dedicated SSL. Both Shared as well as Dedicated SSL fulfill the main aim of SSL.

Does it also mean that if you use hosting service with SSL, SSL sign will be visible by the visitors?

You need to get a private SSL for that purpose. With a shared SSL you aren't offered the SSL sign.
