Default Best way to compare servers speed?

For example I am hosting 1 site with company A and other site with company B.

Now I want to check that which company's server is fast, what should be done to check that?

I am asking because my own internet is not very fast so how can I compare the exact speed of two servers?

These kind of website speed test sites are reliable for that?

    Thanks

Sure you can let those tools do the work and tell you how fast servers are via numbers but I personally believe numbers don't tell the real story all the time. Personal first hand experience is more valuable and is a better indicator of how fast servers are.

Those tools told me my host's VPS package is FAST and it was confirmed through my personal usage and experience. But in many cases, the numbers can be misleading for other hosts.

I think this is the best method. Cachyfly has mirrors relatively close to the IP you are accessing it from, so the speed from both machines should have the same potential.

Hi) Usually the speed is categorised in two broad categories:
    1) The Net Speed
    2) The Servers Processing Speed
To test net sped try to download a big file at one common Destination; server speed is your Ram and CPU speeds and also it will depend on the OS, hardware components and so on.

You can place a button your page that people (and you) can click to get a speed test between the user and the server. If you get a few people to click you can compare speeds. It's also a way for your users to test. Speed test

You can also ping the server from your computer to check the response time. Also, If you have a shell account on the server that allows ping, you can also ping from there to your computer.

If you want to know the number of hops between you and the server, do a traceroute, which can also be tested in both directions similarly to ping.

Ping shows the latency in milliseconds and traceroute shows how many networks your data has to hop over to get to the destination, along with the latency of each hop.

before you buy server it is really hard to test it. But you can check the available hardware specification and then network connection. If you need really fast network you can take dedicated newtwork port. Haven't tested any but they must be really fast, because you will be the only one on that line. But it will cost you a fortune!

    @Jani:

Forgot to include the link directly to the Speed Test button creator: http://host-tracker.com/get_instant_check_button/

If you are wondering, I have this on my hosting homepage so people can test.
